So first year in 12 years that I have not been able to get my 1st choice of entry points. So on to new adventures, anyone have experience with Entry Point #25 ? Looking for a lake that we can base camp out of, maybe do some day trips and good walleye and bass fishing. Leaving out on June 11 for 6 days.

Empty your pockets for a tow to Splash lake, then head for Fraser day 1 via Ensign/Ima. Avoid actually staying on Ensign (if you can actually find an open campsite, that is). You will find good walleye fishing in some of the smaller lakes around Fraser.

How far or hard do you want to work to get there?

Went in here a few years ago with a group of young scouts, we paddled to Ensign and base camped there. It is not an easy paddle by any means, but can be done. From Ensign, there are a lot of things that you can do, we took a trip to Canada one day, and went to Cattyman Falls another. You could get a tow up to Splash Lake, but we chose not to, because we wanted the whole experience of paddling The Boundary Waters. Depending on wind direction, as long as you stay to one of the shorelines, you'll be fine. If you do end up in this area, I highly recommend fishing on Splash Lake!!

If it were me, I'd take the 6 mile tow from EP 25 to Sucker/Birch portage. Paddle to somewhere on the South Arm of Knife. Excellent fishing all around. Some day trips options to smaller lakes (Ameober, Cherry, Eddy, etc). Arrange for the tow back as well (i.e. Latourell's tow is $31/person each way).

As an alternative to the trips suggested by others to Ensign or Knife, you could consider going into Basswood instead. You can either get to Basswood from Moose via Wind Lake, paddle from Moose to Prairie Portage and then into Basswood, or get a tow part or all of the way. You can even get towed farther west to Lincoln Island or Back Bay.

Personally, I'm not a fan of towing. At 3mph a 6 mile paddle is 2 hours. If you go slow and fish along the way, maybe 3 hours. Just get an early start and set a pace you can maintain. Knife is a great destination though. Very doable in one day too. I'd say 5-6 hours to get there, maybe less if you single portage.

I second this option. We did a similar trip two years ago a week later in June. Thomas lake fished well too. Hid from the wind behind the many islands and bounced jigs off the points of the islands. Mayfly hatch slowed the bite halfway through the trip though. Supposed to be a few large lake trout in Thomas too but we couldn't even catch the smaller ones. :)

Lots of excellent day trip fishing options too. Enjoy your trip!

You could always camp on Wind Lake and day trip to Basswood, Indiana, Good.

Lots of options out of Moose lake. Knife, Basswood, Wind, Splash/ensign and points beyond. I would recommend talking to your outfitter, if using one, for advice. If not using an outfitter, start looking at maps and planning.

Another option is to camp on the Moose chain and day trip to other lakes from there. I know a lot of people are bothered by the motors, but it's still way quieter than most of the lakes around home

The portage from Moose into Wind is a bit of a do but interesting.
Wind has another portage into Basswood that can be rough with
A creek running right across the path.

Yes we are going to LaTourell's in July, getting the tow to Prarie (Just to get a picture by the Canada sign), then heading to Knife on day one. Haven't decided where from there yet.... Love the site by Eddy falls, but REALLY want to hit Cherry lake.

I have used EP 25 a couple times and I love the paddle. I am not a fan oof a tow. Great way to ruin the serenity of why I come to the BWCA...start and finish on a noisy motorboat...no thank you. One time I paddled north into Birch Lake and then dropped down through Trident and Frog, into Ensign and back out (1 night solo). Last summer, my husband and I went to Wind and then into Basswood for our first night. Then we headed east, spent time on Knife (stunning lake!), Topaz, Cherry, Eddy and beyond. When we came back we managed to get the last site on Vera. There are endless options, but the whole area can get busy so start early, stay flexible in your plans, don't pass up an open campsite after noon, and have fun!
