Battery support and length of operation? Are you charging at camp and if so with what?

How many memory cards are you bringing for a 8/9 day trip? Are you running continuously and then editing out at home?

I'd appreciate any insight into time lapse needs. Memory, battery etc..

What editing platform are you using? Does it allow you to add music? Still photos taken with alternate camera or phone?

I have a 9 day solo planned and am investigating making a video. However if I'm constantly preoccupied with camera work and logistics I may swap it. I'm very cautious on what I bring into my solo trips so not to interfere with the solo vibe.

You may get some responses from people that want you to trip as they do.

I have a GoPro 9 and take 4 batteries with me along with a charger that holds 3 batteries. I charge them using a 10,000 Anker battery which in turn gets charged using a Nomad 7 solar panel. I have three 256 GB cards. All that is enough for me since I don't leave the GoPro running a great deal. I never use the 3rd card, but I want it if I "need" it.

Generally, I turn it on if I think there is something I want to record. I don't leave it going just to see if something happens. This means I miss things on occasion.

Are you trying to document your trip or grow a youtube channel? That will help form a response.

I record all that I want to then edit at home. I have, on rare occasions, deleted clips but that was when I didn't take 3 cards. Now I don't fool with it because it was a pain. I use DiVinci Resolve to edit, and it does everything that I want, but my needs are low. You can add multiple tracks, some of them being audio/music if you choose.

If you already have your GoPro, I suggest hitting some youtube channels that speak about the settings to use. One guy is a BMX rider so he's good for action shots. Another is nature, etc. Then you will want to do the settings on your camera and see if you like the results. I personally do a blend of specific settings and letting the camera decide for me.

As for a camera changing the vibe of your trip, it WILL at first, until you get used to filming. If part of your fun is recording, then you will fall right into it. If you struggle with figuring it out, then you may feel like you lost part of your trip. You won't know until you force the use of it for a period of time.

I take 4 extra batteries and two 32 gig memory cards. This gets me about 6 hours of video, plenty for me. I plug the video chip into a card reader on my IPad and upload the video onto my iPad Pro. I use the Apple IMovie editing program. You can also use GoPro Quik too, But IMovie is easy to use. To answer your question Yes you can Make your movies with sound. When I make a movie of a trip I start with a movie title, then add the video clips, still pictures, music I want, mute the sound on the video, add slow motion, add text to describe what you are doing, fade in and out with video clips. I have used about 4-5 different video editing programs and they all are good, some are better but you might not need all the bells and whistles. You just start with a video, then add or subtract sound, add text. Its all done in layers and you do the editing. If the clip is 25 seconds long but you only want 10 seconds in your video because someone walked in front of the camera, no problem, just cut the 10 second part out you want and insert into your working video. You also need to find enough music to fill your video, or your movie will be silent in parts of it. I like to remove the audio part of random people talking on the video and replace with music. Apple makes it so easy for video and music editing. I’ve even made a few quick movies on iPhone with music, its so easy to do with Apple products.

I used to have a channel that made a little money but I didn't make it for that purpose. I deleted it a few years ago. I have another, but I made it for fun. I did a few test videos but I found that it interfered with the level of fun of my outdoor buddy, so I will only do my solo trips from here on out. I enjoy the process.

If you are kicking the idea around, start now and film little small adventures. Don't wait until you are awesome at it to put things up as the first few won't be very good. Go through the entire process to overcome those first few issues.

Uploaded to my channel right now are the two videos I did to iron out my process. They aren't very good but they served their purpose. Covid killed my planned trips to Canada where I was going to do full videos.

Check them out if you want, but remember these are just to iron out my process.

Also there is one video from my old channel, when I used old editing software, old cameras, etc. I leave it up there as some people go to it to see a trail on a particular forest.

sounds too familiar - interference with the solo vibe. That's the reason I dropped gopro altogether. FWIW my Hero 7 black battery while used with remote lasted approximately 40 minutes. The remote battery lasted may be 3 times that long. If recharging in the field one has to carry a separate power cable for the remote.
Hero 7 battery is rated at 1220 mAh, meaning that 10,000 power bank will recharge it approximately 5 times.
For editing I use Sony (former Vegas) Movie Studio. It's a highly flexible editor, but the learning curve is kinda steep. Not too expensive (the whole suite is under $100 I think), but I won't venture into it without getting a good book for enthusiastic beginner.

Don't even come close to filling it. I always think the bigger the better a 256 would suffice and they are pretty cheap now. I think like 25 dollars on sale. I'd at least do that.

I pretty much now just shoot video at 4K and then pull pics from the video if I want a still shot for an action video but I have a photo setting as well so I can quickly do a photo if I want.

I only chose it because it is free. I just add all the photos to my ipad or icloud photo and then use them in imovie. I can use any music I have already downloaded or uploaded or Imove gives you some options too. I am not expert just gettign into it.

My issue with GoProQuick was it automatically cuts the videos and zooms photos. It is probably the quickest and easiest method of making a video. I use iMovie now as it is easy and gives me more options.

I’ve had GoPros since they came out and the editing programs have changed about 4-5 times. I now use IMovie because it’s so easy to use. GoPro Quik is more for the person who wants a short quick video posted to social media to show subscribers what you are doing. That’s why it cuts, and zooms.

I have 3 cameras that come with me on trips. All GoPros, a Hero (1st edition), Hero Session 4 and a Hero 7 Black. I bring about 4 extra batteries for the Hero 7 and I charge the Session and original Hero using my weather radio’s charge port. If a longer trip (over 6 days, I may bring a small solar panel). It works great doing this setup. I usually mount 1 camera to the canoe, 1 on my person and have 1 handy in my pocket if needed. I only film when I anticipate something happening. Like others have said, you miss some stuff, but you save battery and time in editing. The software I use in editing is called Filmora by Wondershare, I love that software for gopro editing and it doesn’t cost too much at all. It’s fun to do and is a great way to create video journals of your trips. I hope to look back years down the road and see the growth of my kids over the years through these videos.

Some cameras don't recognize cards over a certain size/capacity. I have a stack of 256GB cards, as that's the max recommended for the GPH9. I believe the 256GB cards can hold just over four hours of 4K 30fps footage.

Welp! This is a timely question...



...as I'm getting ready for my maiden season - GoPro and all.

I already sent the kids down a tubing hill with my GoPro, and scrubbed/edited the video for practice. Next weekend, I'll be sending the GoPro out with my kiddos at SkyZone in Milwaukee, and making another video.

I'm on a Mac, and I hemmed and hawed over DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro. In the end, I just went with FCPX, for....reasons. LOL

I won't be adding music not my videos, it's less thing to worry about. But you can certainly add music, photos, graphics, text to your videos. You can keep it as simple as you wish, or make it as complex as you wish, with music, graphics, wipes, color grading, or luts.

I have a trip planned to the Gunflint Trail in June - 6 full days. Will be taking the kids paddling and fishing on Clearwater, Flour, East Bearskin, Poplar, Loon, Hungry Jack... maybe Gull for a day. I plan to break off for some solo paddling/fishing here and there.

If I can keep my memory cards to one card per lake/day, that'll help me stay organized. I like simple. :)

The thing I love about my canoe is the Universal Mounts added to the thwarts. Makes it easy for mounting my GoPro to a stand, then mounting the stand to the Thwart. Easy insert/twist and it's on. My GoPro canoe stand/arm is rather long, so the camera isn't all up in my face.

If you have wood thwarts with a flat top, you can buy these, and screw them into place. You could also drill and screw them into a carbon or aluminum thwart (at your own risk).

I have a boatload of batteries, as they're pretty inexpensive. But depending on the temps outside, they might last 2 hours (if it's warm), or they might last 1 hour or less (if it's cold). So I plan to bring quite a few with me. I don't plan to use them all, but they'll be with me if I need one. Or two...

If want the camera to be less intrusive on your trip - I'd only bring one camera, a couple of 256GB cards, and 6-8 batteries - or 1 battery per day, so you're not pre-occupied with charging. I wouldn't record continually throughout the day. Anticipate for stuff you might want to cover with video footage, and hit record. If you forget, you forget - just enjoy the moment.

I wasn’t aware of that, I guess I can confirm with my ignorance that the Hero GoPro 5 and GoPro 8 can use 512 GB cards pretty easily.

I don't have the camera (GoPro 5) running for long periods of time and rather am more prone to scenes of a minute or less that are later edited together to make a video. my trips are about 4-5 days and two batteries will last me most of the trip.
I do bring a small pre-charged power pack to recharge a battery should I want to.
A 32 GB memory card is plenty of space to record and save what I shoot. The editing program I have really come to enjoy is Adobe Premiere Elements. You can do a TON of things with it. I'll also share a link to my channel, if you want to look. A number of BWCA trips are mixed in with other family fun so you may have to sift through for canoe country videos. You Tube channel

Newbie filmer here - while I enjoy it and like the ability to create memory videos, my limited three years of pretty amateur experience is hobby level only. :)

My responses:
1) GoPro Hero 9
2) 4 batteries and a solar charger. Use almost a battery per day
3) Several 64 and 128 gig cards - SanDisk extreme pro micro work for me - no, I don't record constantly. My daughters enjoy using it which is also fun.
4) I love learning Davinci Resolve as a video editor - lots of youtube instructional help - yes, you can do everything with it. The free version was more than enough for me but after two years of the free stuff, I simply wanted to do some of the more advanced stuff and bought it.
5) I think my gopro adds to my trips. I record but never watch and enjoy seeing what I captured when I return. The voice-activated commands are helpful too.

a couple of years ago one of the guys we bring up got a camera like that and decided he would make a "film" of our trip. He was in my canoe. He sat in the front and hardly ever paddled as he was "filming"

never paddled with him again.

Ha...that would be a terrible experience, put him in a solo...he'll figure it out :)
