Just a couple pictures of the weather in NW Minnesota. This year the snow blower has been getting a lot of use, just bought 7 gallons of gas for it. I hope most of it gets used in my generator this summer. It has been one of the windiest winter in along time. 40-50MPH hour winds several times this winter.
So you members from down south can question my sanity. I am retired and have no reason to stay up here in the winter.
The visibility is good on the pictures, a little further east I am sure it’s down to zero at times.

Nice, I graduated from UMC/Crookston. I lived in a 10 foot camping trailer with straw bales around it up to the roof. I was on the grid and kept it warm with a ceramic heater/mostly.
Your pics bring me back to memory lane :-)

I feel the same Ray. Best decision i made was to avoid a commute! I walk to work most of the time. So, the snow can just keep snowing. I love it! I don’t have to drive in it unless I want to. And I don’t want to. Ha It makes it so you can fully appreciate the beauty of snow.
Here’s a couple of pics that I particularly like. The sunrise was on a morning commute.

Wow, P99! Great pics, and I see you even picked up the accent already! Like a boss! An up north boss, ya!

Ya, I definitely moved to the right place. I freaking love northern Minnesota. If it wasn’t for all these out of towners. Ha ha ha ha just kidding. That’s one of my jokes.
I hope we can get together this summer!!
It seems as if the accent is unavoidable, even if you try. Lol oofda! Ya ya

A couple of things; first of all, how can your hands be at 10 and 2 and be taking that picture ??:) secondly, I think we start out mocking the accent and then pretty soon you don't even know you're doing it..don't ya know!
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

Ya... I spent 3 1/2 months in Arizona. Funny to have like a Texan with a real southern accent tell me, oh your from Minnesota. You have that accent. And I’m thinking... who has the accent?
Home two weeks and still can’t get to my garage. My hands are to bad to shovel that much or mess with my plow truck. Everyone I know says... you came back a month early. That won’t happen next year!

Yes, accents are all in the perception aren’t they? One of my new friends told me I say certain words funny. I do love hearing the difference in Regional sayings. There are a couple I have never heard before. And a couple that I say that people have never heard up here.

Here in Maine, we had more snowfall last night, that clingy stuff that sits on every branch. Now it's sunny and as only a northerner would know, it's so bright that it's blinding. It's in the low thirties, so I took my walk only wearing a down vest. That's another experience only a northerner would know.
I visited my mother in Florida a few years ago and was waiting for my ride at the airport, wearing only a t-shirt. A man kept trying to warn me about how cold it was that day and how I really needed to don a jacket. I kept telling him I'd be fine, but he just. wouldn't. let. it. go.

Ha! I feel for that guy! For years I would always be freezing when we'd go north to visit my in laws. I swear 55 degrees was exceptionally warm inside their house in winter. They'd be fine in regular clothes and here I'd be wearing long johns under my pants, three sweaters, and sometimes my stocking cap inside.
A couple of years ago we went up and I was actually too warm in all my layers. Had I become a tough northerner?? No! A peek at the thermostat showed a balmy 65 degrees!
Thinking back I remembered the previous summer my MIL and I talking about all the miseries of being pregnant, one of which was always being so hot from carrying around your own personal furnace. I had jokingly and unthinkingly said I loved being pregnant when we visited them in Ely because I had actually been warm the entire trip.
The dear thing has turned up the thermostat every time we visited since. Do I feel a little bit bad about them roasting because of me? Yes, but also so, soooo much warmer!

Some friends and us were in Costa Rica in Dec. and it was 70 with a stiff wind. We were wearing long sleeve shirts and jeans and it felt awesome. The locals were wearing insulated coveralls, coats, and some even had blankets around them. We kept getting the funniest looks from them, like we were from Point Barrow or somewhere near there. And I'm from Iowa, you guys from northern Mn. would have been wearing tee shirts or tank tops!

Hard to imagine that cold. Living in the desert all my life has had its rewards for me. Like this pic, just under an hour from my home in Tucson.
Hot as you can imagine in the summer...but I would rather have that than the cold...or so I say without ever trying the cold. Go figure!
I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it!

Still here, leaving in a week or 10 days for a slow roll back to MN. I'm the clean shaven one.

I miss it, last lived in Detroit Lakes (actually Richwood) on Buffalo Lake up there and loved every minute. I was a kid so didn't have to deal with driving but I had 2 dogs and the great outdoors. Some great memories. Iowa hasn't quite embraced the winter like the northern MN has.

My personal favorite MN accent story.
My wife and I were down in Mazatlan the year the Macarena came out......I remember at the time thinking at least we don't do this stupid dance in the states....... 3 months later........Ugh.
Anyway, my wife has a large extended family from the Fosston area of MN.
We were on a tour boat and a group of college kids got on board, three girls sat in front of us and started chatting away.
Both my wife and I looked at each other with the biggest smiles on our faces.
I ask them.... "Where are you girls from, Thief?"
All three of their heads spun around and looked at me like I was a wizard.
One was from Detroit Lakes, one was from Moorhead, and the third was from...... Thief River Falls.

I used to be a waiter for 15 years. When you wait on 150,000 people over time, you can't help but take an interest in how they say things. When customers were clearly from out of state, I liked to guess where they were from, and actually got quite good at it. Not only are accents slightly different from 1 state or region to the next, the words they use vary as well. For instance people in Florida might say "they're fixin to" do something. Soft drinks might be called pop in Minnesota, Soda in other states, and "coke" in another. I made the mistake of bringing someone a coke, when they ordered a coke, and failed to ask them what kind. They actually wanted a root beer. Some areas, you may as well bring everyone at the table a sweet tea, like you would water. You might hear the word Davenport in Iowa or Nebraska, but are unlikely to hear it in Minnesota. I just thought it was interesting, to pay attention, and see if I could figure it out. Sometimes you'd realize they were born, and grew up in New York/New Jersey, but lived their adult life in GA/Alabama, and had a mix of cultures and accents. That was really fun when I could figure something like that out.
