So many videos from motor lake fisherman, but I haven't found any canoe fisherman videos using snap weight clips when trolling. I don't see why it wouldn't be a great solution, but I've never done it myself.

Anyone use snap weight clips for trolling and targeting suspended walleye & trout?

Recommendations on clip size or brand?

I have used these Cabela's clips successfully for lake trout with a bell sinker attached. Easy on and off when landing a fish.

I use Water Gremlin Snap Loc Dipsey Sinkers all the time as a way to get my crankbaits down when in the BWCA.

It has increased my hook-up ratio with walleye because I can get the lure down closer to the strike zone.

The reason I started using snap weights is because I couldn't get my Flicker Shad down to the strike zone if the water was deeper than 15 foot without increasing the size of my lure, which I didn't want to do.

So I put a three-way swivel on my line and clip one of the weights to my swivel and then put a floro leader of about 3 feet and attach my Flicker Shad.

It works really well going at slow speeds, but as you can probably assume, as you start to move faster the resistance on the weight actually works against you and it becomes harder to achieve that target depth.

This method also works great to get a little extra depth when trolling for lakers.

I use Offshore Tackle OR20 2 oz. Snap Weights to run 30 feet deep with 75 feet of 10 Lb. Berkeley XT @1.2 mph ( according to Precision Trolling App). Offshore has gone to the newer Guppy Style Snap Weight. I like the older style snap.

I will troll flutter spoons for Lakers with this 2 oz. Snap Weight and get them to run 30 feet deep.

I also run Rapala Deep Tail Dancers TDD-09 with the 2 oz. Snap Weight. A TDD-09 will run 16 feet deep @1.2 mph with 75 feet of 10 lb Berkeley XT out … so with the 2 oz snap the TDD-09 will run 46 feet deep.

I have begun using one of the deepest diving lures (SALMO Free Diver 12SDR) that will run 33 feet deep with 161 feet of 10 lb. Berkeley XT out and not using a Snap Weight. Salmo claims their Free Diver 12SDR will run 40 feet deep especially when trolling with thinner braided line.

I should have mentioned that I usually fish for Lakers the last week of June and the 4th of July. Lakers will roam just below the THERMOCLINE and In Quetico the thermocline averages around 35 feet in late June and 40-45 feet in July and August.

I try to get my spoons and crank baits just below the thermocline for lakers. However, lakers will come up many times and hit lures only 15 - 20 feet deep in the hot summer when lakers can be deep.

If I don’t catch lakers trolling near the thermocline, I will move to vertical jigging 2 oz Bucktail Jigs near the bottom in 40 to 80 ft of water.

Walllee, a member of this forum even slow trolls white 2 oz. Bucktail Jigs near the bottom. He has been very successful with slow trolling heavy Bucktail Jigs for lakers. I am going to give Wallee’s laker catching method a try.

I learn so much about fishing from folks on this forum.

I'm taking notes for better usage of my snap weights! :)

See you at Copia Terry and we can discuss snap weight trolling a bit more in depth.

Thanks for adding time of year. We usually go late May and have picked up trout casting from shore and trolling 50 ft down...the snap weight clips just seem like such a small, light solution to increase hook up if they're lower in the water column.

Cabelas' snap weight clips seem to be the unanimous choice. Appreciate the input.

FWIW, I also use the Salmo 2.0 oz snap weights. These allow me the flexibility to set the weights where I want on the line after the cast depending on the conditions. I used to use the in-line weights (anywhere from 1.0 to 2.0 oz), but these lack the flexibility of where to put them on the line and one has to be careful not to conk themselves on the head while casting. I speak from personal experience. :)

Similar idea.
I like being able to change depth by reducing/increasing speed. Much more sensitive to speed than leadcore. If two people are in the canoe, each needs to be paying attention to the other in case of a hook up or snag(real in fast).
