So im planning my first trip To the BWCA for the summer of 2023. Going to just do a base camp beings this will be my first trip into the bush.

How soon can I reserve my permit?
what point should I begin my trip from?
If I plan my trip with a outfitter will they have my permit ready when I get there?
What are some good outfitters to use in Ely Mn?

"How soon can I reserve my permit?"
You should reserve your permit as soon as possible. Some popular entry points are already full. Once you know your entry date, log into recreation.gov and look what entry points are still available.

"what point should I begin my trip from?"
Moose Lake entry point is typically available and is a good first time entry. A lot of people arrange a tow if they don't want to paddle far. From Moose, you could basecamp on Moose/Newfound, Basswood, Wind, or Ensign.

"If I plan my trip with an outfitter will they have my permit ready when I get there?
What are some good outfitters to use in Ely Mn?" I let others answer this since I am self-outfitted.

You are planning a trip for 2023, correct? Those permits won’t be available until January 2023.

We have been self outfitting for 30+ years but we have been picking up our permits and bait from Spirit of the Wilderness in Ely. You can't go wrong with Steve, Kathy and Ginny helping you out. They will steer you straight and have top quality gear to rent. Good luck!
