Hi All -

First I want to thank everyone for the ideas on where to look for lodging for a trip this summer. I just booked and can't wait for June to arrive. We will be fishing the White Iron chain from June 9-12 and looking for recommendations on spots as well as presentations for that time of year.

We will be targeting walleye but also love catching small mouth bass...so hoping we can find a few spots during our time on the lake to get some fish for the frying pan!

Thanks in advance for any and all thoughts, tips, ideas!

Thanks Blutofish -

I definitely will be asking people around Ely when we get to town in June. When I've been up there for a BWCA trip in the past, everyone has always been very helpful at the bait shops, outfitters, etc.

As a planner...most of the time :) ...I am hoping to get some research done, in advance through this great forum, on places to fish on the chain prior to getting there. I've got a map that I'll be marking up for our group to use so we get a idea of where we are going to try out when we hit the water.

Thanks again!

What lake are you staying on?

Current flows into White Iron and then to the others and out. That early, you'd be good to find those narrows areas for all sorts of species. Where the river comes into WI and then the bridge where it turns into the next lake and so on. Find the pinch points and fish the eddy and in the current and above it.

Hi Cyclones,

Thanks for the tips! Definitely will try to locate and work those spots.

We are staying on Garden at Deer Ridge Resort. Sounds like most people focus on White Iron, which will be great…doesn’t look like it will be too long of a boat ride to get there.

Can’t wait!

Get out your maps, here we go!

Garden Lake:

* Almost directly east of Deer Ridge is a point on the north shore.
* Further east where you turn south to go into Farm there are a bunch of islands with a bunch of structure.
* In the narrow section that heads out to Farm, on the east shore, there is a tall rock wall.

Farm Lake:

* As you exit Garden heading south, there is a small island with a hazard bouy, good structure around there
* Further south into Farm there is a mid lake hump, you'll need electronics or have to sound it with an anchor
* Heading back west in Farm just before the end there is a weedy bay on the north shore. Be very careful getting in there, there's a prop eating rock guarding the entrance. Great for pike in there.
* Turning south, you'll wind up at Silver Rapids, fish along the steep shoreline at the outlet, right in the middle just below the bridge, and also at the top.

White Iron:

* Heading south into White Iron, on the west shore past the Silver Rapids Campground is a point with a house on it, good walleye structure just out from that.
* Further south, another mid lake hump in the bay near White Iron Beach resort.
* Further south the lake really narrows. There's a couple of rocks on the east side, usually with seagulls on them, great walleye structure there. On the west side there are a couple of islands with a mud button that drops off pretty quickly into a rock bottom.
* Further south, as the lake opens back up again, there's a tall rock wall on the east side locals call Ring Rock, steep drop off there.
* Finally, way south and east, where the South Kawishiwi River flows into White Iron.
