On my inaugural trip last summer and in all the videos I can recall, I see plenty of walleye (pickerel) and good sized northern pike being caught, but not much else. I also love fishing for laker trout or stream trout. I know Woodland Caribou (which has a lot of lakers) produces a map with species, but is there anything like that for Wabakimi? If not, is anyone willing to share the names of lakes with lakers, or moving water with stream trout? I'd love to mark them on my maps if I can find them.

A good number of the tributaries to the Albany and the Ogoki will have brook trout (speckles). As well, of course, the Albany has brook trout. I have less on lakers, but I know there are lakes around Caribou Lake that have those. Fishing outfitters like Don Elliot are likely to have a lot of intel along these lines; I don't know of an official map that carries the info, though some of it may be on values maps for the surrounding crown land, because it is supposed to be included in forest management planning.

The Fish ON-Line site has some of the lakes in Wab surveyed, but as usual that is just a starting point:

Ont MNR does periodic fish counts in the area.
They may have info on the species and expected numbers.

This was interesting to look at. It pretty much shows lake trout in most of the bigger and some other lakes - Smoothrock, Whitewater, Caribou, and even Little Caribou. Yet I’ve never seen anyone catch a laker in any videos. I can’t but help wonder if the are just not being shown, or if they ready are not much there?

Also still eager to markup my maps about any potential brook trout waters, if anyone is willing to share.

I am not saying this link is useless…I think you can trust angler observations but the entries put in by the Ontario version of the DNR are suspect. For example Kawnippi lake is listed as a Lake Trout lake. Good luck catching lakers…it doesn’t look like a laker lake either. Although I did spend an afternoon trolling for them and catching nice walleyes acting like lakers. Or another one is Paulene lake which is a largemouth bass lake…but the link lists it as Northern and walleye…luckily anglers entered different observations.

Anyway I wouldn’t plan around this for Lakers but as SNS said it could be a starting point.
