I don't know how but my buddy Joe managed to one-up my 38" lake trout on fishing opener last year on LLC (just three days later) and catch one that probably would have hit 40" if we had an accurate method of measurement...We did have a Boga grip, but couldn't in good conscience hang a fish of this caliber from its jaw knowing the damage that would have caused, so we will only guess what it weighed. The internet is telling me that a 39" lake trout should weigh around 24-25lbs and this fish was every bit of that.

Anyone on here ever run into a fish like that on their BWCA/Quetico travels? I think I will forever list these two fish on my personal list of canoe fishing accomplishments...I'll forever be chasing that feeling: the successful catch and release of two 20lbs lake trout on one trip

Those are very nice fish. If you want an accurate way to measure fish, pick up a bump board. I use a Rapala one which folds up and sits nicely on the side of a canoe pack. Worth it when you catch a beast and want an accurate measurement.

I have upgraded my measuring system since this trip to an oversized soft-sided ruler, the problem with fish this big is finding a flat place for them to lay while I get the measurement. A bump board large enough to lay the fish flat on would be nice, but would certainly add a lot of bulk to my fishing kit, which is already getting out of control. Thanks for the heads up, I will look into a folding bump-board and see if I can find one large enough to cradle trophy pike, walleye and lake trout
