I saw this advertised to me on Instagram today.

As if dirty diapers in the fire grate and freshly cut down trees on the water's edge weren't enough....

Bear Alarm

I'm obviously joking but I'm sure there are some less seasoned BW travelers who might give it a thought!

I remember the dirty diapers thread. A real classic.

A person posted a thread asking if it was OK to burn dirty diapers in the fire grate.

What have we become?

Some guy who was tired of his car getting broken into rigged something like that inside his car.

The thing that worries me about something like this being so readily available for sale on the internet at a cheap price is that it appears that you could easily slip a regular 12 gauge shotgun shell in instead of a blank. What could possibly go wrong?

I just buy a fifth of Jack Daniels and give it to my paddlemate. I encourage him to imbibe until he's unconscious. I don't drag him into the tent.

When the bear steps on him, he goes, "Oof! What the heck?"

And I am warned.

Well . . . it's a lot cheaper than an electric bear fence ;)

This is obviously too far, but I don't think that some of the electronic trip wire alarms are such a terrible idea. The concept I heard about was to tie one end to a tree and the other to a blue barrel or bearvault. That way you are alerted, and a bear is possibly scared off, when it tries to go after your food. Sure, the noise would be a nuisance to other campers, but not as much as a problem bear.

Other uses for a trip wire, such as a perimeter fence, sound like terrible ideas.

This sounds like a great idea for those dreading that late night trip to the thunder box, after stumbling out in the dark and accidentally setting it off the long walk would no longer be needed.

No kidding! Or what if it just went off in the middle of the night? Tough ways to wake up.

Given that it has a flashbang charge of some kind, I can’t help but wonder if it may be considered a firework and therefore not legal? I don’t recall if bear-bangers (generally available in Canada) would be legal in the BWCA or not either?

I would set this off myself for sure :)

If you could rig it up to your food pack such as to go off after the bear knocked your bear pinata to the ground I could see some use there.

I remember the bear fence discussion. I thought the guy got way too much flak. I wouldn't carry one in but at least he is trying. Especially with some of the idiocracy we've seen the last 2 years.

Exactly. There is nothing wrong with going through a bunch of bad or somewhat bad ideas while trying to find a good one. Especially since many people don't recognize a good idea until after it has been proven to work.

Man, I'm sort of a practical joker.i would love to have some of these.

Imagine one of the guys at deer camp running out the the outhouse in the dark in the morning and BAM...when he pulls open the door to the out
house.
Then hook up a trail cam video to get it on tape.

Or, I'm thinking the trip wire duck tapped to my buddies driver. Pulls the driver out and BAM.
BAHAHAHA.
