Packing up dehydrated solo meals - I realized I could use much smaller plastic bags for powdered ingredients. While you can order them, they may or may not be food grade.

A simple life hack just I stumbled across... put the Ziploc bag you want to split on a cutting board or counter, heat up a metal straight edge knife over a gas burner for 10-20 seconds and then slice the bag from top to bottom right down the middle. The heat will both cut and seal the new edges. Don't cut too fast, give the heat time to seal the plastic. Took me a couple tries to get the heat and speed right.

Works great for turning the 6"x3" snack bag into two 3"x3"s.

There are several videos out there on the intrawebs; I take no credit but it was too useful not to share!

If you have a vacuum sealer you can do the same thing. Seal 2 strips, about 1/2" apart then cut between them with a scissor or knife. You'll get a more durable seal. Also dedicated sealing machines are very cheap on Amazon, $30 or less. I reseal all sorts of packages where I don't want to vacuum seal it, everything from food to small parts bags, to items I'm returning. You can find them for as low as $10. I also purchased a roll of 3" wide food grade poly-tubing so I can make virtually any size package I need for mixes and ingredients, even liquids like sauces or oils. When I seal both ends it's extremely durable because it's not zip lock. I used to work for a food manufacturer and this is how we used to pack samples in our kitchen and lab.

This is a great idea to save on hauling out extra trash and bulk.
