We will be staying at a cabin on Lake Vermillion for a few days in July and would like to day trip into the BWCA. Any suggestions for a good entry port?

We are experienced kayakers and can cover a good amount of “ground” in a day. Two years ago we entered at Fall Lake and enjoyed our trip, but want to try somewhere new.

It’s not as long of a trip but South Hegman lake to see the Pictographs in North Hegman is a really nice day trip. The small section of water North of the pictographs has some special plants that are also worth seeing.

I like Hegman for a short day trip too. If you are kayaking, how do you feel about portaging? Hegman is about 90 rod portage to get from the parking lot to the water but then just a short one between South and North Hegman to get to the pictographs. It is a short fun trip.

For covering some water with little portaging, Lake One through the end of Lake 4 gives you a lot of paddling with only two short portages. After that to Hudson, the amount of walking increases.

Trout Lake would be a good day trip. If water levels are high you could also get into Pine.
