Putting in and back out EP 37 Kawishiwi lake and heading south 13+hours. Nothing against Sawbill outfitters but I just don't want to add almost an hour to the drive. Are there any other places to stop and shower down 61? I'm thinking worst case scenario stopping at a truck stop somewhere.

Might be a rent-by-the-hour motel in Duluth. Not sure if you'd want to go there though...

One time I showered at one of those private campgrounds down Highway 61...the kind that caters to RVs and similar. I can't remember the name, nor do I know if it's still open. I think it was like five dollars A quick Google search might help.

Sawbill is only 6 miles out of the way from the split (12 miles round trip) so an extra 10-15 minutes each way at the most. Grab a shower, some snacks, and a few trinkets or gifts. You'll be set until you get to Duluth or even further. Temperance River State Park used to be an option but I think I read someplace that you can no longer use the shower facilities at those state parks along Hwy. 61 any longer with a day pass. You would need an overnight camping permit which is hard to come by as they fill up quickly and most are reserved in advance.

If you are passing through Superior, the Holiday station on 53 south has showers.

Burlington Bay Campground in Two Harbors has showers and a much better view of LAKE Superior than the City of Superior. ;-)

Might be smart to verify availability for non-campers.

We went in and out of EP37 in 2020 and were in the same dilemma. We found that the AmericInn in Silver Bay had $5 showers. They seemed very accustomed to having smelly paddlers use their shower facilities that were adjacent to their pool.

Not sure if this is still the case but the AmericInn in Tofte will sell you a shower for $5 which I believe they donate to a local school or some community organization. They allow you to use the showers adjacent to the pool area. I did this after a winter trip in 2017 so not sure if they still do it.

Thanks I called them asking if they would do a one night stay before our trip… the answer was no

Any time we've used EP 37 we have used Sawbill and it wasn't very far of a drive. A great Outfitter to support too.

I think the Knotted Pine in Isabella has showers, give them a call. It would not be out of your way, just a bunch of gravel roads to get there, then you can take Lake Cty 2 to US 61 at Two Harbors.

Same here, exactly! It was a very pleasant stop and then I was on my way, happy, clean, refreshed.

There are so many great outfitters in canoe country that provide the canoeing community so much support, so many services, and so much free information that I try to support them anyway that I can when I'm near the BWCA. Even purchasing something as simple as a shower, a candy bar, a beverage, a t-shirt or gift helps them. As a bonus every time you see that trinket, or wear that t-shirt or hat, it takes you back to that trip and gets you dreaming of the next one.
