What type of fishing line do you use for lake trout? I have strictly fished for Walleye in the BWCA prior to this upcoming trip and I think I got bad advice from a friend on fishing line. I currently have 6 lb mono on my fishing pole but from what I've read, that may be too weak...

We will be fishing on Little Trout lake and from what I have read, the name is apropos.

I appreciate any advice!

I use 10 Fireline for everything on my trips. Setting your drag to the action of your rod is the most important thing.

I have used 8 pound Trilene XL dating back many years, when fishing for lake trout in a canoe. IMO it's a good compromise weight - fairly strong but yet easy to cast, and not likely to spook fish.

The canoe provides some additional "drag" besides your reel. If your drag is set properly, and you tie good fishing knots, it is hard for a fish to break off 8 pound test from a canoe (unless a pike bites through your line, but that is a different topic). I have been drug quite some distance in my canoe by pike unable to break my 8 lb test :-)

I use 8 lb test mono as well. Never had an issue, caught dozens of trout in the 3-8 pound range, as well as plenty of pike in the 8-10 pound range on the same line.

6 lb or 8 lb mono. Maybe a 5 foot 25 lb fluorocarbon leader line if I'm worried about Northerns.

i like to step it up to #10 trilene and #12XT trilene for deadbait from shore. your line goes through a lot of rock , it takes a beating , retie often ;)

Looks like this is the popular opinion here! I will put 8lb Trilene XL on my main spool and keep the 6 lb mono on my back up spool.

Thank you for your in depth response!

10# fireline or equivalent.

If I was using mono 10# is the lowest I'd go, unless i was on a lake known for smaller trout.

Even with my 10# fireline I got spooled one time--wish I had 20# that time.
