Hi all,

Heading into northern Q via Nym end of May for 7 days/6 nights with plans to fish primary northern Sturgeon and Russell. We will likely basecamp the first 4 nights in that Sturgeon/Russell area and then spend that last 2 nights in Pickerel narrows. Any info on northern Sturgeon/ narrows or Russell lakes- depth, water clarity, folks are willing to share? My first time in that area. We fish hard all day and hoping to get into some good LT action this year. Only 1 out of 4 in our group has ever landed one. We normally target Walleye, SMB and don’t often find ourselves on LT lakes. Would you recommend we basecamp in north Sturgeon/narrows or Russell?

Thanks!

I don't think you're gonna find LT in Sturgeon or Russell. But you could easily portage to either Ram/Antoine or Olifaunt since you're fishing all day. In high water you could probably just paddle to Ram and avoid the portage. The portage to Olifaunt is easy. I've never fished it for LT but ornery-Jim from Canoe Canada marked them on my map along the south shore as well as in the bay through the pinch in the south part of the lake.

Pickerel Narrows may hold LT in the cold water months. I don't believe the water is deep enough in the summer for them.

If traveling in that general area with intentions to catch lake trout I would definitely take Argo's advice and spend time on Antoine as I think that is your most consistent bet for numbers and size of trout.

Olifaunt has lakers. July 2006, Trans-Quetico trip.
