Hey,
I have a trip to the pine lake area in a few weeks, and we are hoping to check out johnson falls. It doesn't seem very well marked on maps, it appears to be a river near pine lake/little caribou lake and I'm curious how exactly to navigate to the falls. Is there a walking trail? is it canoeable? any information is appreciated!

Thank you.

We were on Pine last July and had same questions. No worries as you will easily find the trail to Johnson Falls. Stay along south side of Pine as you approach western end of lake. Right before stream enters Pine you will find several places to off load and store canoes along south shore. You will then see trail leading to the falls - go right (west) to falls. The trail basically follows the stream. If you go left (east) you will end up on Canoe Lake after a long winding portage. It is a beautiful area. Keep in mind there are 2 sets of falls. Enjoy your visit!!

The Pine Lake landing of the Canoe-Pine portage has a trail that continues west. Just follow it. Yes, it kind of forks once or twice, but those forks come right back together, and if in doubt, stick to the north side of any given fork to stay near the river. Pro tip, once you reach lower Johnson Falls, the trail has a fork just before it that leads to upper Johnson Falls. And from there, there is a trail that continues even further west for a real treat of seeing a gorgeous view.

Be sure to check out the colossal cedar tree below the lower falls. Directions to tree in this link.

I found this map online before my trip in 2020. I wish I could remember where to give credit. It helps visualize it.

It's a beautiful site well worth seeing! Don't forget there are two falls, upper and lower. Make sure you see both. I've also heard it's worth goin above upper but I didn't do that when I went.

The main attraction is at N48° 03.736' W90° 15.810', but we continued up the left side of the stream to the falls above as far as N48° 03.671' W90° 15.791'. Beautiful.

Also, if you are carrying up from the south, you can leave your canoes and gear on the shore before walking west on that last stretch along Pine Lake. A wide open landing has been made there. About where the benchmark symbols are on this map.
