I started using a hammock in 2020 and really enjoy it.
Its hard to get in my sleeping bag tho. I just bought an
under quilt and am thinking of using a blanket instead of a sleeping bag.
Thoughts?

I believe most hammock focused over quilts are blankets with the option to gather the ends. I have used poncho liners in summer trips for years. Works great.

I use my sleeping bag as a blanket. I will only zip it up about 1 foot from the bottom to make a box for my feet.

Highly recommend giving this a try, it’s basically what a top quilt is.

Got a top quilt this season after three years of using my down bag like Hammertime describes. I don’t know why, but I really like the top quilt a lot better. It’s just easier to use as a blanket, no zipper and no part for the head. I guess just seems a better fit. But pretty subjective. The bag works fine too.
Fwiw, the other change I made was adding a thermarest during early season. So much better than sleeping right on the nylon, even with a 0 degree underquilt.
If you’re trying to decide, hang the hammock in your backyard and try a blanket and see what you think. I was surprised how much I like the top quilt better than my down bag.

Top quilts were originally specifically designed for hammock campers for just the reason that you indicate in your original post. A top quilt will typically have a foot box to keep your feet and lower legs enclosed and warm, while the remainder is like a blanket, so you don't have to try to crawl in and out of it like you would a sleeping bag. They are wonderful.

Thanks all. My son has probably outgrown his youth bag, I think I'll get one blanket and we can both try it and a unzipped bag and see which we like better.

Just go to Hammock Gear and get a top quilt.
Quit messin' around.

Top quilt is the nicest option, we have Hammock Gear and UGQ stuff, super nice and made in USA. Unzipped sleeping bag still works well.

I used my down bag as a top quilt for years. Finally purchased a top quilt and it’s great. No need to be trying to crawl in a bag if you have proper underneath insulation with either a pad or under quilt.
