In May, I received a letter from the Orthopedic doctor that replaced both of my knees. One in November of 2012, and the other in November of 2014. The letter stated that the polyethylene cushion in both of my replacements had been recalled. As a result, now I have to go back and have both knees redone or revised. First surgery is scheduled for July 28th, and the second around 6 weeks later. I am hoping and praying I can get able to get back north and bring my grandson to the BWCA. Last few years have been rough, can't walk distance like I used to, can't ride a bike like I used to either. I am ready to do some of the things I had planned to do in retirement!

At least it was only the cushion in your knees recalled and not you :)

Good luck with the procedures, hope they go well.

Hopefully the new ones will work better for you. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I feel for you AM. I had a R hip joint replacement last December and it is working out well so far. But over the past week the other hip is bothering me with any weight bearing. When I first met the orthopedist who did my surgery he told me he didn’t like the look of the L hip, but to not think about it. Now I feel I need to get an evaluation of it quickly because in a month I am scheduled to head for Canada on a multi-week trip.

That stinks. I'm sorry to hear that. Any advice to avoid this to the younger paddlers out there?

In my case it is arthritis that attacked my hips and I have it in my hands also. My orthopedist told me about 80-85% of hip joint replacements he does are due to arthritis, which runs in my family. He also told me to remain as physically active as possible. I like to swim laps at the local Y and he told me that is a great exercise due to putting little stress on my joints. All three of my siblings (all of us in our 70’s) are overweight and inactive and I am trying to avoid that.

Well, the first surgery is over! It will be three weeks tomorrow. I am way ahead of my goals in therapy! This time has been so much better than the first time. I guess because I knew what to expect, and I found a pain medicine that I was able to take for the first week that worked and did not make me sick. The new drug called Nucynta is somewhat cost prohibitive almost $1000.00 per 30 pills depending on where you get it. But, we were able to get a Good RX card and got it for a little under $300.00 for 30 pills.
The next surgery is scheduled for Sept 16, there will be a little more work to do inside of this one, but I am praying it goes as good as this first one. I can't hardly wait to get back to living life and not have to wonder why my knees were killing me all the time. I pray this is the last recall I have to worry about!

Second surgery was done on September 16, and it has been a whole different story! I am 3 months out of surgery, done with therapy (or Medicare said I was), the doctor has released me to do whatever I want to do. Which is all good! However, every time I do something, walk, drive, sit in a deer stand ... the knee and lower leg swells. Good news is it may only keep swelling for a few more months. Dr. said damage to this knee was extensive and I lost quite a bit of tissue from the revision. Supposed to be as good as it is going to get in a year. Does anyone else here suffer from a lack of patience? The Good Lord willing I will possibly make it back to the BWCA next Summer! My ten-year-old grandson is wanting to come, and it would be my honor to take him on his first trip! Wife wants to come back as well, said something about wanting some fresh walleye! Have a blesses day!
