Where did all the hummingbirds go.

Is it me, there seems to be a lack of them this year. I had a few to start but now nothing.

We have them here in Indy.

Oddly enough, on our June BWCA trip we had one come by camp. That's something I've not seen before and a real treat. Here in KC, I'll admit we don't have the numbers from years past.

We have a lot here in the far NW suburbs of Chicago at my house. I see them at the hummer feeder all the time, sometimes two at the same time. Not a bird expert, but as far as I know they are all Ruby Throated. They are faster than $%^&.

As a side note, I had a robin that bit the dust early this morning. All that was left was a pile of feathers. I think a hawk got it. We have a lot of Red Tails around here and Great Horned Owls. I love hearing the Great Horned Owls in the winter calling out all the time. If I mimic the owls, they always call back. I always think they are mocking me for my lousy owl calls.

I was also thinking that right now they have lots of natural food to eat.

I did purchase a new feeder today and this evening had its first Hummingbird. The feeder I replaced was very old so maybe that had something to do with it.

Seems I spoke to soon. My son informed us we have a nest outside his bedroom window. Never before has this happened.

We have 2 or 3 at my feeder in Mpls suburb. Whenever there's one at the feeder one or two are dive bombing the one on the feeder. They're so fast it's hard to tell for sure.

I didn't put my feeder up til about the week before memorial day. I didn't see one until the first week of June. Since then, I have seen one or two regulars show up. I call them regulars because they seem to come around the same time of day, and they fly off in different directions. Got dive bombed by two of them this morning when I was changing the sugar water. All females so far.

Very cool to see a nest! It's common to see fewer birds at your feeders while they are sitting/raising their young, as they feed the young insects. As soon as they fledge, you'll be making more sugar water!

In all my JV bird watching this nest is the coolest things we've gotten to see this up close. I only wish I could get the window screen off without disturbing mom. Combine my dirty windows and the screens equals less picture quality. I think there's tiny babies in there already.

This is something new for me. Yesterday morning, I noticed a male hummer at the feeder. Since my feeder is only about 10 feet from my kitchen window, I get a pretty good view. I don't often see males, just females. Anyway, he decided that this was HIS feeder, and camped out on the pole that the feeder is suspended on (it is a homemade set-up). It was like he was standing guard over it. I thought he might be looking for girls, but every one that came up, he chased off and came back to resume his spot. The only time I have ever seen anything like this was a few years ago during a wet and cold period. A little female huddled on top of the pole and sat there until the weather changed.

I was camped on Caribou Lake, just south of Poplar Lake a week ago. Sitting in my chair, a hummer landed on my boot, which had red shoelaces. It sat there for about a minute before taking off. It was awesome. I think we bonded.
