If you can manage minnows they are far more effective this time of year.
I think one of the most common mistakes fishermen make is they have success with one pattern or method and then they try to apply that same method during different times of the year. That being said walleye shift to several different locations thorughout the year and they also rotate what they feed on. Leeches are a summer time bait that is most effective from June through early September, before and after that minnows are king. Sure you could catch walley on leeches in late september, but I'd venture to guess if you polled 10 professional walleye fisherman and asked them what type of live bait you should be using in late september, all 10 would choose minnows.

Jackfish posted this update in that same thread:
"Update: I tried calling the Beaver House again and the number is non-working. I called Buck's Hardware, someone answered who gave me to the live bait person and I ordered our leeches. Easy peasy. The guy was more than happy to help me.
For early June, the leeches will be a mixture of mediums to jumbos. Perfect. We'll pick up some nightcrawlers while we're there, too. "

"It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.”

Skip live minnows if you are on a canoe trip. Invest in some Gulp 4 inch packs, couple jig head sizes with fairly long shanks, and read up on snap jigging (YT regulars Tom Boley or Jon Thelen have great walleye videos and cover fall techniques very well). Walleye and bass are feeding like crazy 75% of time in early fall, the trick is more about finding them and understanding the depth they will strike at. Although it is relaxing to throw out a slip bobber with a leach while enjoying the scenery.

I picked up a pound of leeches at Mike's Holiday across the street from Buck's (Buck's closed before we arrived in town). It was a mixed bag, most were pretty small, but they had them! This was over Labor Day weekend.
Rockwood Lodge and Ugly Baby had them by the dozen as well.
I think that we had better luck on crawlers than leeches though. I agree with others, minnows would probably be best if you are willing to transport them.
