Just wondering if anybody has ever camped on Ojibway or Triangle the night before your EP into North Kawishiwi? Did you like that, or would you rather have stayed in Ely or perhaps camped at Fall Lake the night before? Just noodling on some options.

It seems that those sites are used mostly by folk who either plan to stay on that lake and not enter the wilderness or maybe use it as a day permit base.

As a night-before camp, it's not like you can count on sites on those lakes being available. Seems like they've been occupied every time I've paddled by in July and August, and I have entered here seven times... Then, you either paddle back and employ Plan B, or head in and risk being cited for entering the wilderness a day early.

The biggest issue, is there’s no guarantee those sites will be available. They are very popular. This time of year? I’d say your chances are good. Summer? Slim to none. At least you can reserve a spot at Fall Lake.

I would humbly disagree with the assessment of the availability of the sites on Ojibway and Triangle. I have a cabin very close to here, paddle these lakes pretty frequently, and have stayed at a few of the campsites before. They are not used that often. More often than not, at least 1 of the 3 sites I’ve visited have been available. I think your idea to overnight on one of these lakes the night before is great. If you run into trouble and they are occupied, you can simply try Fall Lake Campground or if that fails, just pitch camp at the Lake County Yard Waste site just down the road from Ojibway. I see people camping back there all the time. It’s within Superior National Forest, so disbursed camping is allowed as long as you’re on public land.

My 2 cents.

I'm not too worried about it being busy, just wondering about people's experiences on those sites compared to other night before camping and lodging.

Are they decent sites?

I’ve stayed at the Triangle site and I’d rate it as a 3 star. It’s a little worn, has a nice landing, plenty of tent pads and a decent kitchen. The SW site on Triangle is beautiful (4-5 stars). Best site of the three by far. The other site on Triangle Is decent, probably another 3 star.

I often stop for an Irish coffee at the Ojibway site while fishing that lake but never camped there. I think it sees quite a bit of use, but it's a nice site with plenty of tent pads and a nice fire area. Problem there is it doesn't really give you much of a head start to EP29, it's maybe 10 minutes from your car.

How 'bout some guidance on this?? Can't seem to locate it on a map.

Late in responding.... I did check them all out and you all were right...nothing special about any of them on both lakes. Pretty heavy use and one was even missing a fire grate. Fortunatly, I postponed my trip til Octiber 2, so I went straight through both lakes and camped on the Kawishiwi.
