I’m planning a spring fishing trip to Kelso and was wondering if anyone has fished it. I understand that the Walleye and Smallmouth is very good but have never fished it. We plan on staying on Kelso a full 7 days. Thanks!
Yeah, I don't know. Hate to be the guy, but it might be tough to fish Kelso for a week. If you like to look at pitcher plants, Kelso is definitely your lake, however. You'll likely want to to explore nearby options for fish. I've personally caught some nice walleyes from Alton on a spinner/crawler. Go to the top of the page and use the search function to check out how folks have done on nearby lakes, and then plan a couple of day trips. Anyway, that's my advice.

My first BWCA trip with my son was on Sawbill. It was great, but the walleyes shut off the minute we arrived. Guy at Sawbill Outfitters said "the walleyes are biting any anything". I should have known. Regardless, Sawbill has a number of great sites on the north end. It was a great experience. All said and done, we wanted to eat fish. We headed to Kelso. When nobody could catch a walleye on Sawbill, we were able to hit a few northern on Kelso one afternoon. It was enough for a chowder, some fried fish, and some fish tacos. We explored a couple campsites on Kelso and were not impressed to return. There might be one or two somewhere, but all in all, I would not be able to spend a week fishing on Kelso when I knew there are other opportunities so close and nearby. I'd recommend staying on Sawbill or Alton and commuting into Kelso.
