I believe I got this idea from here a couple of years ago. It's just a tailpiece and a couple of clamps. I put wing nuts on it so it can be moved around by hand. There is a little rubber washer between the two clamps. The whole thing weighs almost nothing, and it's cheap to make.

The size of clamps is visible in the second picture. As you can see, they are offset slightly so if your rod was on the left side of the canoe, attached to a thwart, it would be angled forward slightly.

Rod holders are bulky when traveling. Attach them out of the way, up-side-down, attached to your canoe seat or anywhere out of the way.

Lots of good options mentioned on the forum. I do like the inexpensive idea from disk1, but that doesn't work for the majority of the time i use the rod holder.

My personal favorite is the scotty rod holder. Get the clamp that attaches to the gunnel of the canoe. picture and links are below. very secure. I can move it around if I am fishing in our tandem by myself (90% of its use). The actual rod holder is a separate piece that can be removed for portages to keep it out of the way. I just leave the clamp attached to the canoe.

If you are using a kevlar canoe avoid the cheap version that clamps to the sides at all costs.
