We are still here. No real wilderness plans for 2023, but we do have a cabin reserved at Rockwood Lodge for a week in July, and our granddaughter says she still wants to go with us. (She will be 20 next summer, and has been going with us since she was four years old. A blessing.) We will do some hiking, some canoeing, and the usual cabin things: campfires, games at the table, swimming in the lake, etc.

Still here as well! Hope to backpack the Northern Rockies and another adventure in the B.W.

Still here! Plans are…….
*June trip to Wood Lake with 15 year old little duckling for our annual daddy/daughter trip starting when she was 5. I plan on getting the permit on opening day for the first time ever. Actually, The earliest I’ve ever booked a permit is April and that was 15 years ago.
*July trip to Kawishiwi Lake campground with 4 year old Bruin for his second father/son trip to the edge of the bwca. Next year will be his 1st bwca trip.
*August stay in a Rockwood cabin with the whole family for some hiking, canoeing, and kayaking.
*October stay at Nelson’s in Grand Marais for our 15h annual family trip for Moose Madness and Gunflint Trail exploring for the extended MEA weekend. For both girls this is their favorite family tradition.
Hopefully in October I can find a nice weekend to fit in a spur of the moment solo with our dog Echo like I did this year over Halloween weekend.

Happy New Year. I hope everyone has a healthy happy 2023 with lots of adventures.
Looking forward to a two night trip to Bright Angel Campground in Grand Canyon National Park and a hike to “The Wave” in Coyote Buttes North in Arizona.
Gunflint Trail area in May and backpacking the Four Pass Loop in Colorado this summer.
BWCA trip in early September.

Happy 2023! Big goal is to spend more time on the water locally up here in northeast Iowa. For this summer: a May trip with son, probably exploring his new "neighborhood" if he's working for an outfitter; a late June trip with the crew, undecided but looking at Knife or maybe Tuscarora area. Grant and I may give the "Ely Challenge" a shot if he has a couple days off. And likely the KW Challenge with my brothers in September. Lots of paddling this year, I think.

Alive and kicking here in California. Did occur to me yesterday that having some canoes in the side yard might prove handy. And the rain is supposed to start again tomorrow. So who knows.
We do hope to do more local canoeing this year with day trips to watch the sea otters in Elkhorn Slough and local paddles and rowing for fun and fitness. Have not yet started to plan a BW trip.
Happy New Year and great paddling to all!

Here, and looking forward to a Quetico trip for the first time since 2019. Not sure when as I will become a grandpa sometime in June courtesy of my youngest, Greta. This is her around 15 years ago as were were heading out from Rockwood; blows my mind that she is going to be a momma!

YJ checking in from southwest Wisconsin. I appreciate reading everyone's check-ins with plans and updates. I only know a few of you personally but your messages resonate and inspire me and for that I am grateful.
My two oldest daughters, juniors in college, and I will hopefully find time for a 10-day bwca excursion. Also planning a week-long trip with my two youngest daughters, ages 11 and 9, and we are thinking of doing a simple loop trip somewhere in the bwca. My two teenage daughters have decided they are too busy this summer for a bwca trip...deep sigh...hopefully just a one-year hiatus. Planning a week of day trips with my Dad for fishing and photography and we'll truck/tent camp this year for comfort and ease, probably northern Wisconsin or bwca day-trips.
Most importantly, I am grateful Momma Yeti and I get to take them all for a week together on the Oregon coast in June. For me, it doesn't get any better than family time together.

Hanging around. Planning is in the process, but looking at 1 hiking trip to the Pow Wow Trail, a June canoe trip with dad and my kids, and a solo trip in the fall. Might find time for a July trip as well for all 5 Gophers. Also, planning to do a late winter trip in early March to the Gunflint side in search of lakers.
Happy New Year!

Still here. Haven’t decided where we’ll go yet- kind of waiting to see if we can talk anyone into going to the bw with us, or if it will just be hubby and me. I'd like to do a long trip, but I’m not sure my knees can handle a real strenuous route anymore.
We will also take a trip to Idaho to deliver a custom made bedroom set to our son (made by my brother in law) so I’m sure we will do some hiking and exploring while there.
And we’ll go East to visit our daughter, but that is a different kind of wilderness-

Present. My youngest graduates college in May and doesn't start his job until July so able to get in one more May trip with him. A laker and walleye trip so probably SAK. My wife surprised me and said she would like a trip this year as well. Roughing it is a three star hotel. She has been twice in the past thirty years. Looking Labor day in moose county. Horseshoe or baker or homer.

Still here! Probably just one BWCA trip this year, but still hoping to get my wife up there one of these days. Main plan is to get one year closer to retirement.
Just put one foot in front of the other; eventually you'll get there.

Happy New Year!!
Still here and kicking. I retired this year with many plans of trips to the B-Dub! These guys are my travel buddies, (my sons) and 2023 was going to be the year of introduction of this wonderful land and water to my 6 year old Grandson, but we will have to postpone for another year. All good though! The reason is each of these crazy guys are expecting their second child, one in March and one in June!! That will make 4 Grandkids to plan for the future trips while I am still "young".
Peace,
Doug

I’m here and still enjoying being a member of BWCA.com. Already planning a trip to Quetico in June. Unsure of where we’ll go this trip, but definitely from one of the northern entry points.

I am still kicking!
Hope to make a trip in the BWCA every month this paddling season. Tried to for the last 2 years but forest fires and family injuries put that goal aside.
Hope to meet some of you this summer in the BWCA!
Happy paddling

January 16, 2023 will mark 50 years working in the grocery business for me so I think it's time to hang it up. Been able to take 1-2 trips a year for the last several years, planning at least two this year. Luckily my tripping buddy is about to retire too.
In addition to the BW trips we plan more car camping/hiking/backpacking in state parks and national/state forests which are hidden gems in many cases. Hopefully a few more rounds of golf too. My wife is 7 years younger than me and is going to have to work at least another 5 years...oh the agony. Lots of time for me to play. Actually there is a downside to this too because we would love to spend parts of winter in warmer climates but it will be awhile. She is very gracious in allowing me time to be in the woods, bless her heart. Thinking this might be tested in retirement:)
LIS 14 in late May, another trip late August to early September, destination yet to be determined.
All is mostly well, feeling my age and need to work on improving overall well being. Definitely a project for early 2023. No date set yet for retirement, thinking mid June to October 1st. Get 6 weeks paid vacation June 3rd and that's definitely worth sticking around for. Good health, fulfilling adventures and happiness to you all, a great community.

After 4 successful BW trips last summer, I am hoping for something similar. However, I am having a harder time getting everyone to commit to dates this year. I hope for one family trip, one solo trip, and one trip with some friends who will be 1st timers up there. And maybe will figure out one other trip if time allows.

Just returned from ringing in the New Year with a 3-day paddle on the Current River in Missouri. We cheated and base camped but had a great time.
I'm hoping to do a Canadian River this year, for the first time.
The upper sections of the Turkey River, Upper Iowa, and Buffalo River are also on my list.
My biggest goal is to teach my nonverbal/autistic son to use the paddle. He loves to camp and canoe, but at times I could use some help with the paddling.

Haven't penned in any trips yet, pheasant season ended yesterday in Mn, so working on the cleaning and storing of the gear over the next few days. Ideally I'd like to have 3 BWCA trips in addition to a few wknd paddling trips, and more cycling in general.
No good camping story starts with it was 70 and sunny.

Present. Now living in Pine City, MN on a farm I'm renting from my in-laws, practicing law in the Twin Cities, and enjoying life as a husband and father - baby boy/future bow paddler just turned 6 months old recently.
Wilderness trips planned:
-Pacific Northwest in February - not a backcountry camping trip, as we will be staying with my folks and in an Airbnb, but hoping to snowshoe at Mt. Rainier (day trip) and hike at the Hoh Rainforest and on the Olympic coast (3 day trip).
-Possible BWCA Trip at the end of July with my brothers and brothers-in-law, we're still in the planning stages. Watch for a report. Thinking Sag EP 55 to Ottertrack, Ester, Hanson, Cherry, Gigikiki, Lake of the Clouds and back to Ottertrack and Sag and EP 55 - 4-5 days. I've been dreaming of this trip for years. I haven't gone in almost 7 years, it's time to go again.

Still here, still kicking. Got our first little adventure buddy on the way, due in a month so we will see if that impacts a trip this year or not for my wife. Got about 30 nights snoozin in the woods last year. Our friends got engaged on Finger Lake during our BW trip in 22 so that was pretty cool!
As for the big trips, I'm still planning on doing a week trip up to BW sometime in August, probably some kind of local river trip over memorial day weeekend, and probably a week or two overlanding and camping our way through some part of the country in the fall. Hope you all are well, and can't wait to get planning again here soon.
Cheers,
Atrain

I'm still here.
I didn't do much paddling last year but may make up for it this year. I applied for a volunteer wilderness ranger gig in my old stomping grounds on the Tofte Ranger District. I'll see what happens.

Present.
I had a great backcountry year in 2022: 5-day backpacking trip in Canyonlands with my 14 year old, third annual 3-day bwca brotherly bonding trip, a week spent crossing the bwca with my 17 year old, and 24 luxurious days solo in Wabakimi.
I doubt 2023 will measure up, but I’m hoping for another canoe trip with my soon to be 18 year old, a 25th wedding anniversary trip with my lovely bride, and perhaps a short solo.
Happy 2023!

Wishing all a happy New Year and best wishes for Canoe country!
I am retiring from MN amateur baseball this year (can't compete with kids 30+ years younger than me) so will have more time for paddling!
Currently planning annual cousin trip in June entering on LISN EP#14. I think we are going to Beatty portage and then follow Lac La Croix around the top and up and over a bit. I would plan more, but plans always change after the Canoe gets wet! Only thing that never changes is the EP and Date!
Also hoping to do a solo (unless someone volunteers to save me from that agony) to Stuart lake (probably my favorite spot in the BWCA) and maybe trying to get an overnight to Sterling sometime in Sept.
paddling the Moosecamp - Really beautiful when the water floats the canoe.

Present here on the West Coast. Planning on going to Quetico for the first time this August. Probably an out-n-back on the Man Chain from PP. I still need to get two more species to have the Big Four. Walleye and Lake Trout.
We've got 10 days but I find I like a relaxed pace. I'll probably even take the tow!
Hawaii, road trips and camping in the Redwoods before that.
I'm also seriously looking at a used canoe and start exploring around here. Besides using it to get in shape on the slough down the street.
C-ya out in the wild!

Present. I've compiled a list of 30 new bodies of water to paddle, all less than an hour away. Plus, I'll want to paddle again at least a dozen of the ponds and bogs I paddled in 2022. All in Maine. I'm thinking about catching a striped bass from my canoe. They're so strong that I'm a little scared. Might do it. Might not. We'll see.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Also planning on a week long fishing trip with my wife to Willow Flowage in northern Wisconsin when we get back.

Checking in... its been a while since I posted here. Hoping to plan my 15th annual trip with my Dad. My son (17) has come on several trips now too and hoping to have him along as well. Who knows how many more we will have. At 40 my body is starting to tell me I wasn't very kind to it in my younger years. Having the left knee checked out Friday...

Flytyer still here...at age 81 (in April) planning a trip. With a Biventricular pacemaker and A-fib am still wanting to go. It will be an easier trip with limited short portages.
Just need a trip in the wilderness. Need to catch a couple of walleye and smell the pines. Hear the loons and the beaver slap the water.

Keeping an eye on the forums as I contemplate my next BWCA solo trip - which will be in my new Northwind Solo! Looking at Baker EP and doing the Frost River in May. Starting to look at some more recipes for dehydrating... want to keep things as light as possible for as much portaging as that trip will involve!

Still here and still grateful for this incredible community of folks!
I'll be returning with my son in late May for my 7th and his 2nd trip.
I've officially given up on trying to drag my wife and teenage daughter into the wilderness proper, so instead we're doing a week on Crane lake in August. That will be good as we'll have the whole family together, adult kids and significant others included.
I'll sneak a fall solo in as well, I really love it up there in late sept or October. Weather and work always make the timing on that one interesting.

Still feeling better than I deserve after my 67th trip around the sun. Planning for a trip up the Gunflint the week before Father's Day, and maybe another reunion trip with my 3 brothers, my son, and some nephews, God willing. Not tom mention running into many of y'all along the way.

Still hear and dreaming about the next adventures to be had. Sounds like some awesome trips planned by many of you! Will have to plan a Quetico trip one of these years!
In 2022 I missed out on a BWCA trip for the first time since I was 12 years old. Between finishing up graduate school, having our first child, and an Achilles tear I could not swing a trip. Was able to get in some awesome hiking in Glacier over the mid summer during a family trip though.
In 2023 I am planning for a big week long fishing trip with some high school and college friends. Early June the 8 of us will be hitting up LLC. Then I am sure many other day and overnight trips on Northeast Wisconsin lakes and rivers chasing fish.

Still here and excited to paddle this year. Just picking up a canoe paddle in the garage in the middle of winter can get me excited. I am blessed.
Four trips planned again this year. May 30 solo to Quetico
July trip with son and son in law to Quetico
August trip to Quetico with the "young guys" I used to work with before I retired.
September trip to Quetico with my son as a blended solo trip where we will camp some nights together and some nights not.
Quetico. I can not wait to return for another year.
Like sand slipping through an hour glass my time traveling the woods and water of Quetico is growing a bit more slippery every passing year.
But for now Paddle On!!!

Happy 2023!"
Tomo, Happy 2023 to you too. Sounds like you had a great 2022 and this year's plans sound wonderful too. I'm not sure I have the correct person but did you buy a solo boat from me a couple years ago? If so, still have it and how do you like it?
I'm still here but don't get out paddling. Hoping for some day trips with close friends this year. I'm working on getting a small group of paddling friends camping near the bwca and doing some day trips near or in bwca. We've been doing an annual memorial camping &paddling gathering for about 10 years in various places including the Namekagon, Brule, Sylvania Wilderness and even bwca [mainly been either a pre-actual DB Memorial Paddle Gathering or only very few attending (not me)]. Hope to get other former paddling partners together too for North Shore and day paddles.
Happy New Year to all on bwca.com!

Alive and well!
Although I haven't been very active on the forums for that past year or so, I intend to post more now that I have recently retired.

Still here. Check in a little less often than in the past. I've been going to the BWCA for 52 years, and that probably won't stop this year. Last year, my wife and I were going to take her brother, sister-n-law, and their two kids to Sag, but it was derailed by their son's elbow injury. The tentative plan is to take them up there this year, probably in mid-june.
I bought a new Northwind17 a few years back, with the intention of going to WCPP, however, Covid shutdown the border for a couple years, and the recent major fire in the park, has me hesitant to go now. I've never looped in the Quetico, and it's on the bucket list, so that remains in our future plans.
Congrats to PSWith and LIndyLair on their pending retirements! That's exciting!

Hey, WonderMonkey--Hope Sarah smiles on your group this trip! Or will you take another route?

Not sure what 2023 will bring. Ripped my rotator cuff in 2022, and between surgery and PT I'm still gaining strength back... and 2023 may be the year of the KNEE repair. Kinda decided to try to fix this body before I do any more damage to it. We shall see.

Hi Friends,
I am here, pulsing and breathing. Another solo planned for September on the Gunflint side. Oh, and I'm not really retired. I still substitute teach in elementary schools. Love those kids!
I hope you all have a wonderful, fulfilling year!

Spent some time at Sawbill when the Maple were peaking enjoying the quiet lake but mostly hiked. My body does not like to be cold anymore, but I still love the outdoors and paddling. No clear plans for 2023 but lots of trips already in my head.
01/08/2023 08:03PM
I'm here. Planning on going on an 8-day dual solo with one of my sons in July out of Kawishiwi Lake. Also spending a week during the summer at Clearwater Lodge with my wife and spending time exploring and hiking around the Gunflint, Northshore, Grand Portage area, and maybe elsewhere during the days.
Other than that, continue cutting up and splitting more firewood for my woodstove at my house with the 27 ton splitter I bought last summer. Oh, and the ultimate list of the boss's honey-doo projects.

UP Boy is still kicking at 72. Moved to Minnesota (Stacy) last year to be nearer to some of the Grandkids.
The Grandkid trip we usually take over Memorial Day will bust the 9-person size so I think we are going with a National Forest campground near Ely this year.
Planning a guy family trip for June this year and whatever else I can pick up along the way.

Well, she's not 20 yet, but she will be in early May. I didn't realize until I had a grandchild that they grow up even faster than your children! Still here down in the South. Hope to get up to BWCA in the autumn, but this summer the big trip will be hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc trail through France, Italy and Switzerland. That will be really different for me.
I did not get out on my yearly New Year's Day paddle this year. I was stuck in the house with the flu; after two weeks it is starting to get better. I haven't been on the water for over a month and I miss it. I can't imagine not being able to paddle for months due to ice!

Present!
Making a trip in early March for a long weekend at Gunflint Lodge to see what kinds of things we can find in all the snow! Would like to do some ice fishing and snowshoeing. Renting snowmobiles or doing a dog sled ride is just a tad bit beyond my pocketbook! Any suggestions - let me know!
Not sure if the other half wants to plan a summer trip or not this year.

Happy 2023. Had a great solo trip last year on the Kawishiwi River. The only problem was portaging my canoe. Not sure about my plans this year. I have health issues and got to much flak from my family for going solo. I have been to the BW so many times I am an expert but am now 71. Went with my kids two years ago but they are busy. Will certainly paddle the local lakes.
Happy Paddling

I'll be 75 this summer and my last trip was with my 34 year old son when I was 70. Not sure I have it in me any more to plan, organize, and execute another trip, but sure would like to get back on those beautiful waters again.
May have to see if some of the younger folks from the 15 trips we took back in the 70s & 80s might be interested. Trouble is they all have families with young kids and typically are tied up with other sports activities. May just have to drive up and get out for a day or two.

Still here. It's great to see so many regulars and new people here too!
Planning a trip to Quetico in late June in a different area than last 2 times. I don't like covering the same area much, unless there are more options for slightly different routes. We're excited that it is open again. BWCAW is great, but there was too much competition for campsites last time and the stress of finding a decent open site didn't make for a very relaxing trip. It may be better now since Quetico is open.
Thanks to everyone for helping people find their place in the wilderness and increasing the odds for a safe and happy trip!

Here-here! Glad to see all your familiar names and exciting plans for the year ahead!
Had no huge trips this past year, first Wenonah joined the family. Mostly local day paddles and a few days on the Wisco. Also began construction of a raft to for adventures ahead.
Looking forward to a couple great trips in the next year. For sure planning on the Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande in December and a good chance of returning to the BWCA this June after a two year hiatus.

I’m not as active on the site, but still hanging around. My wife just retired so we’re planning on doing one trip together which we haven’t done in five years. We also have friends who want to do trips with one or both of us.
At our age, we keep our trips pretty simple. I have a cedar strip that I finished last spring so always looking for opportunities to get it wet.

My 13yo daughter asked to go again this year. This will be our 4th annual trip. Not sure when or what route yet. But as long as she wants to go, we will go.
I usually have the full year's vacation schedule planned out by now. But as of now, I don't have anything planned for this year. Maybe I'll just spend my days on the boat.

LOVE LOVE LOVE that she still wants to spend time on the Gunflint with the two of you. I too can't believe she is approaching age 20. But now that we have a granddaughter I can totally relate to how fast that next generation grows.

Still here... just not as often. Work has exploded so I will really need my canoe country time this year. Just not sure how easy it will be to get away.
Fingers crossed here are my 2023 canoe country plans:
Week in June with Luft ... out and back from Kawishiwi with stops on Polly and River Lake and perhaps Fishdance Lake.
July cabin week at Rockwood - yearly adventure with our friends from Chicago.
August week long family trip - loop from Red Rock to American Point. A trip we had to jettison last summer because hubby needed shoulder surgery. Surgery done and rehab is well on its way.
And... I have high hopes for more trips but no idea how I will pull them off. I have been blessed to spend many long weekends up the Gunflint Trail and in the BW but that may not be in the cards for me in 2023.
So good to see so many people still here after all these years. Happy New Year One and All :-)

From the middle of godforsaken Kansas: Too many family happenings this year...weddings, anniversaries, graduations-hopefully no funerals. Doesn't look as though we will make it to Minnesota. Looks as though we are going to Europe/Switzerland with a couple of my sibs in May.
But my wife just joined me in retirement and we have dispersed all our livestock/chores. So we are now free to take off on a whim :)

Definitely still here
I'm planning a 4-5 day trip in Late may...might be a solo or might not - to Crab/Cummings.
Not sure what if anything I will do over the summer, waiting to hear back from the scout trip if they want me to tag along now that my kiddo has aged out.
Hoping to do a 4-5 day mid October trip. Leaning toward North Indian Souix for that one.

Checking in from down here in Minneapolis. I have several more work trips to Taipei this year but I'm planning on peppering my schedule with some "whatever-are-available" permits so I can fit in at least five trips into the park. A night on Snipe Lake, a PMA (Hairy Lake) trip, and making it to Omega are on my list this year. Lots of listening to the incredible Tumblehome Podcast, supporting WTIP, and pumping some city dollars into Grand Marais are all on that list as well!
PS) Maybe I can even sneak in a new Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe into the mix?!

Here. Just did a snowshoe weekend with day trips to Swamp Lake; Moss-Duncan-Partridge; and Moss-Duncan-Rose Falls. Beautiful and highly recommend staying at Poplar Creek Guesthouse.
Plan for a May BWCAW trip somewhere off the Gunflint. Hoping to paddle the Serpent River in Ontario in June (7-8 days). 12-13 day trip in Wabakimi PP in July/August down the Allanwater River, up the Palisade River, down the Misehkow River to the Albany River, ending a few lakes down. And at least an end of the season full day trip or short 1-2 nighter in the BWCAW.

Yep, still around. Not paddling. Have done a few guided fishing trips on Sag with Seagull Creek Fishing Camp, magnetic island vacation (hubby caught his first ever lake trout!), winter trips to Gunflint Pines, Cross River Lodge, fall moose viewing stay at Trail Center. Enjoying as much of the area as possible!

This year my goal is to try some new destinations. Instead of our annual September boat camping trip in the Chippewa National Forest, I think it's time to give Voyageurs a try. Also, my big girl is getting up there in age, she's been winter camping a half dozen times in the BW, but has never experienced a canoe trip. I think I've found a destination that I could manage her size in my solo for a quick trip next Oct.

Here, mostly vertical. We have a family June Grand Marais area cabin rental mountain biking trip. Followed by an early August BWCA trip with my son provided I can con him into it, otherwise a solo followed by my traditional October solo. A lot of driving north in store for me. My Alltrack hates me.

Still hanging around as well, just a lot more busy than I used to be. With the kids hitting their teenage years, I feel like we have the pedal to the floor trying to maximize our time with them before they're gone.
Planning on going to the BW in June with another family as we have for the last several years, destination unknown. Also planning a road trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton to get our hike on.

Happy 2023! We're planning on taking 5 trips to the BWCA this year.
May - Crocodile River Basecamp
June - Snowbank Lake (Basecamp on some lake nearby)
July - East Bearskin Lake (Bascamp near Johnson Falls)
August - Wood Lake to Seagull Lake 50 mile one way journey
September - Little Indian Sioux River North 60 mile Loop
We're moving to Hayward, WI in 2025 to get closer to the Northwoods and the BWCA : ) Cheers all! Dane, Mandy, & Eva

Newcomer here. I've already learned a lot of good info on here, and everyone has been welcoming and friendly. Just did my first BW trip last year, and I hope to make one, possibly two trips this year. Probably solo (which is fine by me) unless I can talk a friend into going with. I'm fine going by myself, but I think he'd enjoy it.
01/24/2023 01:34PM
Another year here... and I will be until I can't make the trip, which better be many more years. After 11 straight years of solos I have been asked by some friends who are turning 50 this year to plan a trip for 4 gents... should be interesting as two have almost no gear. Not sure what I am getting into but will be an adventure I am sure... and maybe, just maybe I will finally post a trip report!

-Bocas Del Toro and the San Blas Islands of Panama mid March
-End of May EP 36 Hog Creek to Parent with the guys to chase eyes and pike
-End of June road trip to Glacier and Banff in the van
-Mid August family trip to EP 37 Kawishiwi Lake
-October backpacking the Pacific coast of Colombia

Im still here but don't post very often. Planning another trip to Lac La Croix via EP16 in August. The 6 of us going all happen to be ICU nurses and we had a great time last year. Also planning another trip with my daughter, brother and his spouse sometime this summer once we get a date set. EP will depend on availability at the time.

Still kickin' around. Can't wait to get the 1.5 year old out of diapers and up there with his dad and grandpa. Hopefully summer of 2024 will be his first BWCA overnights. Grandpa and Lew

I have been lurking for years but decided to become more active here with the negativity about the next generation. Without this site I would have never taken a second trip years ago. On my first trip we made mistakes and didn’t know what we were doing. Some time later I found this site and it motivated me to go back multiple times a year. I believe as a 30 some year old we need to encourage and educate to preserve this place. We have all done dumb stuff and have learned. I love this place and want it to continue to exist with people who care about it as much as us. -Tom

Still here, despite turning 80 next week.
Gonna do at least 2 trips this year, one solo and one tandem.
Looking at no-portage/low-portage routes. Sawbill to Alton is OK, anything more than that is probably too much. It's the landings which are daunting for old guys. We can't vault out of the boat into knee deep water and slippery rocks anymore. I can still paddle all day and carry the kevlar canoes OK, so I am not ready to give up the wonderful BW yet. Eager to hear from listmates their experience with age appropriate routes and sites. Paddle on.

Tardy, but here!
March 10: Canoecopia
May--St. Croix River for a couple nights solo
June 1: Snowbank to Fraser-Thomas and wherever else the paddle takes us. (Two of us: 23 year old son and me) 7 days.
June 21: Couple days on Sawmill and Loyhead Primitive Canoe Routes in Northern Wisconsin Solo
July 9: Kawishiwi Triangle-Gabbro-Bald Eagle and wherever else the paddle causes us to roam. 7 days ( 6 of us including 78 year old dad, uncle, cousin, and friends)
August 4: LIS, to Loon and back. 4 days (6 church friends)
Sept 5: 5 days East Bearskin. Solo: We'll see where the paddle leads.
I really love to not have a specific agenda or plan other than where I enter and when I leave.

Still here. Just been an observer as of late, but it's time I contribute again.
This year I ended up with nearly back to back trips in August. Going with different groups and the dates just landed as they were. So, half of August I'll be enjoying the BW.

Still lurking. Still dreaming. (photo of me on a dead calm Brule Lake) I come back to this one often. No clue what this year will bring but I'm still feeling I can handle "a few more" trips.
Last year at 72 was asked to join a group that wanted to FISH and was so looking forward to it. Best way to make God laugh is to make plans I figure since a few weeks before the trip a medical issue forced me out. The window is closing but I still hold out hope. My Sawyer Guide Special saw the water and I found fish near home but... not the same.
Best wishes to all. May all trips be safe ones.

I'm still kicking!
On a tour of the SW with my girlfriend right now- Santa Fe, San Diego, Tucson.
3 BWCA trips planned so far....7 day solo in early july, 2 wk trip with my son at the end of july, and 3 days on Slim with my girlfriend in September.
The canoe stable is now up to 5, since I got my brother's Northern Paddler Sportsman 12.6. Mostly just hanging on to it in case one of his kids wants it some day.

Still here, but barely. Hope to be around more as I am actually planning a trip this year! I'll be going with some others from the local paddle club. I may end up being the only experienced person. Wish me luck! Haha. We're going to Sawbill in September.

First timer, here. Permit for EP37 Kawishiwi Lk and heading north, possibly to Pan. 70+ year olds going in for 8 days; end of July. Some fishing (new to Northerns and Walleye), but mostly will be soaking in the return to the northwoods and love of canoeing.

Still here, despite a meander in life's road that kept me sidelined for a couple of years. But all the parts seem to be working so I'll attempt a "re-introduction" trip to Quetico in June. Taking it easy and not doing much portaging.

Still here. Have put off posting in here because I'm a bummer. My dog Boomer passed away last summer, a week before our trip into Horseshoe. It was just the two of us for the last 10 years and everything is different without him. The biggest quantifiable change to canoe tripping is having to carry the kitchen myself when solo. Cast iron is heavy! Now that I have to carry it myself again I'm probably going to have to find a new lightweight skillet. I'm excited about kevlar solos again at least, with 100# Boomer we were pretty much limited to backwards tandems. I have 3 permits for this summer, Mudro in July with the fam, E. Bearskin for labor day and a possible June solo on the Frost and Louse rivers.

Hi, it's Hannah -- My husband and I (in our mid-30s) will be back this June, hopefully doing part of the Kawishiwi River route. We've managed to go to the BWCA every summer since 2020. My husband is a good sport; he is from Louisiana and did not grow up doing the lake/paddling/hiking thing. He loves northern MN now, though. So far I have not been able to convince him to do an overnight trip....we have stuck to day trips and stayed in lodges on the periphery. Maybe soon! :)

I retired in August. Paddle while you can... stinks when you can’t paddle anymore.

Ben, were you all fired up about the cake, or just unsure how many candles they might light . . . ? :)

I had a great winter fishing trip on Duncan in March. I also booked a late August trip for myself and my 7yo daughter. We will be entering at Homer and spending 3 nights fishing and exploring before school starts. Any suggestions related to this EP would be appreciated. It will be my first time exploring the Sawbill area.

Still here! Did the BWCAW in 2020 due to COVID closures, 2021 Q trip cancelled due to fires, then 2021 BWCAW trip cancelled due to fires. Did a North Shore vacay instead.
2022 had eye surgery, did Scout camp, then caught COVID, which cancelled my Q trip and my scouting hiking Isle Royale.
2023 Hoping to get back on track…hitting IA, Rathbun Lake pre MN opener to scratch the fishing itch early, Scout Spring Camporee, Scout Camp Riply 1st week of June, then on to Kabby 2nd week of June, Scout camp in late July, leading a BWCAW high adventure crew for scouts in August—-have 2 groups going, which is the most we’ve had ever…One group starting at Lake One and one at Snowbank.
Still trying to get a Family Q trip in to French Lake in early July…thank goodness I’ve worked at the same company forever and have a lot of PTO :)

Back for another year, the mind is ready but the body is trying to catch up. Giving up on the early May trips, there is a lot to be said about being comfortable.

I've done one back packing trip in the Rockies, in the Frank Church wilderness. It was a wonderful, spectacular trip. However, having experienced altitude sickness I have some idea of what emphasyma is like.
I'd do it again if I was able.

Wow, I’m late to the game. Still here!
I would like to retire this year, and I am looking for a few sponsors. In return for your sponsorship of my retirement, you would have the satisfaction of knowing I can do whatever I want.
This picture was taken yesterday in Bemidji. Lol kidding!!
