So we have a late May trip in the works. We’re a generally fit group and experienced trippers aged 47 to 55; we also single the portages. None of us have ever been to Kawnipi or the SE part of the park, so that’s in our sights.

We are also likely going to operate as two groups under two permits. We’ll have three entering Cache Bay from the US (likely a tandem and a solo). We have two guys from Ontario who will be flown in from the North, getting dropped off at Cache Bay with a tandem.

The US guys will be in for two or three nights before the Canadians arrive. Once they land, we’ll head to Kawnipi through the Falls Chain.

However three of us will have two or three nights to play with before our buddies land. I think we’d prefer to spend those two or three nights basecamped & fishing, and we’d need to be about 2/3rd of a day from Silver Falls or the top of the Falls Chain; the group will unite at one of those spots.

Additionally, the Basecamp location would also need to be reachable by the first group in one (long?) day from Hook Island.

My ideas so far are: 1) Blackstone 2) Other Man 3) East end of Saganagons

Wondering if anyone thoughts on those or has other suggestions?

Blackstone. Portage can be rough early in the year, but a beautiful secluded lake worthy of a layover.

Thanks for the recommendation! Not a ton of info out there on the lake, but what I saw sounded promising, with the scenery being a commonly mentioned theme.

How's fishing there? I would think getting on some LT would be desirable, as we will be focused on Walleye on Kawnipi.

Anything else we should know about it, or the lakes en route?

Blackstone has good lake trout, northern pike, and smallies. No walleye there.

There is only one campsite on Blackstone.
