Hey guys, I've got a cabin booked at Rockwood Lodge for Sept 12-16th. Just fishing for some intel on these nearby lakes. Of course, I have visited Mn Lakefinder and printed all the maps and read all the surveys already, but thought I would ask if any one has any experience with this area. It seems Poplar Lake is a bit spotty for fishing, but the other lakes might be much better. Going with my gf and this will be her first exposure to the BW so I'm hoping to get her hooked. We are planning on doing day trips to these lakes. I'm thinking Swamp lake might be a keeper after reading the survey and seeing there are no campsites on this lake, it prob gets little pressure and we might have it to ourselves for the day. The others seem promising as well. Caribou looks like a nice lake, and I promised her a moose siting on Horseshoe so that is a destination for one day. Going to bring minnows and crawlers, troll crankbaits, the usual. Now only 8 months to go, but it never hurts to plan ahead right. Pretty psyched about this trip, had to sell the gf on this and want it to be a good experience for both of us, I'm sure it will be.

Cheers & thanks a million for your consideration, scat

Hi Scat,
I've been through this area a couple of times. Most recently over Labor Day with my gal. Shoot me an email and I'll show ya couple of spots that have produced.

It's a beautiful area for sure. Even day trips to the south side of Poplar around the islands will impress.

Sweet, first time to that area. It looks like a cool lake, getting a boat with motor to scope it out first day, after that planning on day trips to the other lakes. Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated.

If you go to Caribou, bring leeches and slow fish between the first island from the portage over to the largest island. Pretty sure that'll produce fish for you and your girlfriend!

I have been to that area twice. Once in mid June and once in August. I never fished Caribou but have heard good things. We stayed on Horseshoe one night and did okay on Walleye. We did see a couple moose while there. Did well for Walleye and Smallmouth on Gaskin but that is probably a little far for a day trip. The best lake in that area in my opinion is Meeds so I would second Cowdoc's sentiment. I have heard that Swamp is a sneaky good fishing lake as what you said most people don't fish it.

We're looking at day trips from east edge of Poplar... anyone have info on the portage south into Swamp?... might make it part of a day trip loop with Lizz. thanks much!

My maps show Swamp Lake is a dead end lake, there is only one portage into it and out of it from Poplar Lake. It is a 100 rod portage so it can’t be too bad, tho I haven’t been to this area yet, this year will be my first and I am thinking of making it there on a day trip, the Mn Lakefinder reports that there is a healthy walleye population lurking in the depths.
