Hi friends,

I have been ice fishing a few times right around the BWCA and am now considering getting a few things to upgrade my setup:

1) Snowmobile. It would need to be able to handle deep snow and slush. Looking for something reliable that would be good for ice fishing and very cold weather.
2) 3-4 person pop up fishing tent
3) Fish finder
4) A sled big enough to pull all of this stuff!

Any info from this great group of folks would be helpful, thank you!

Since nobody else has replied I’ll give my $0.02. Get a long track snowmobile like 137”. It provides extra flotation. Eskimo quick fish hub house are great. The insulated models have less condensation and use less fuel. Buy a small battery powered fan made to hang inside. Otter sleds with their hitch are the best. Any fish finder will work. Most of the portable models can be equipped with a summer or winter transducer. Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

I currently run an older Polaris with a Clam Yukon X Thermal flip-over, clam cover, clam runners and a fleet farm aluminum hitch. With this setup I can head out my driveway and down miles of groomed trails to the lakes I like to fish here in northern Wisco without firing the truck up or hooking to a trailer. However after a couple of years I'm disappointed in my setup and want to change it up. Here are my takeaways: The Clam runner kit was a scam, way too much money for a handful of bolts and a couple sticks of plastic that could be confused for landscape edging. Used skis would have been a better choice for the same installation effort. The leading edge of the flip over's sled is just rounded off and not any higher than the other end so the sled will just fill with snow/slush from the track unless I have the cover on with gear packed tightly under the front to encourage whatever the track throws up to roll off the sides. This isn't an issue most of the time but can become a major issue very quickly when I do run into a bigger patch of slush. I really like the Otter Pro sleds because of their higher, upswept fronts. I'm also a fan of how simple and tool-less their hitch is and how beefy and better-engineered their hyfax kit is. I have a Clam C890 Thermal pop-up already for ice camping trips but it's much bigger than I want for my solo snowmobiling day trips. Also, at 6' long folded up I'd need to get the Magnum sled to fit it under the cover. So, I'm looking to replace my flip-over with a smaller thermal pop-up and a fully-accessorized Otter Pro sled that it just barely fits in. I still really like my Yukon X flip over if I'm walking out or driving a truck out on the ice, it's just not as trail-ready as I want, even after all my modifications.

Hope this helps. Ice fishing off of a snowmobile with a sled behind is pretty hard to beat!

Zac
