Usually an outfitter books mine, but this year, I am just doing my own.

1. We only have six in the group right now, but might want to add two more before the trip. Can we do that and do I just go in and modify my permit? Am I better off paying for eight now and will they refund my money if I need to drop to six?

2. It looks like I have to pay in ADVANCE for all of the group...over $1,000. A few years ago we each paid at Cache Bay on morning one. We had to each be sure we had a credit card with us. Is that no longer an option?

You have to pay in full when you register for the permit.

As for making changes, it seems that it's possible, but it cannot be done until you are within four months of the entry date see rules and regulations.

I logged into my account to check my reservation (May 21 entry). When I click on the "change reservation" button a message came up saying I couldn't make changes until Jan 21.

FYI, the charge for this reservation was $783 CAD. My credit card statement shows $583 USD. Exchange rate approx 1.34 CAD = 1.00 USD.

I've altered Quetico permits online a couple times--no real issues as long as you're within the window described by plander.

Book with just six now. You can adjust your permit yourself later as already noted or you can just pay up for the additional folks at the Ranger Station on your way in. Just bring your credit card. I've done that before without any issue.

You're better off booking your reservation for two people, then paying the balance at the ranger station. You have to go to the ranger station anyway. Make it simple and book two people (yourself and a backup crew leader), then add the others when you get there. Things can change. Six or eight people told you that they're going FOR SURE... then a family thing comes up and they can't go. You may end up with only four. Reserve low, then pay the balance when you get there.

As far as credit cards are concerned, they REALLY prefer that all charges go on one credit card so they don't have to run charges six or eight times. There is no need for everyone to have a credit card for the charges.

Also, don't forget to order your Ontario fishing licenses online at HuntandFishOntario.com. That's a putzy thing to do at the ranger station when you're trying to get your trip started. Having your fishing licenses in-hand prior to getting to the ranger station is also courteous to any groups that are waiting behind you.
