Hey everyone- I’m looking for insights on ice fishing lake trout on Hungry Jack Lake. I have fished it during the summer with a variety of success. In a few weeks I’m going to try ice fishing the lake for the first time. I’m headed for that line that I drew on the drop off. Going to try jigging spoons and tip-ups with a dead Cisco. Any advice or words of experience is greatly appreciated!

I'd try a different lake if you are targeting Lake Trout. There are very few if any in Hungry Jack.

In that area I would go to Gunflint for lakers. Otherwise ask Forest, owner of Hungry Jack Lodge.

My advice is go down the road to Clearwater or Gunflint for trout.

Are you saying you've actually caught lake trout in Hungry Jack Lake in the past? That would be surprising to me.

I have not, but a family friend did a couple weeks ago.

Sounds like we might head to Moss now…
I would delete this post, but I don’t think I’m able to.

It’s not out of the question that there is one or two lake trout in hungry jack, as it’s connected to west bearskin. Are you sure your friend didn’t catch it from there? But you could fish hungry jack every single day for the rest of your life, and you’ll never catch one! West Bearskin has a very good population, and is very easy to access.

That's always been my understanding as well. With so many great trout lakes along the GFT I wouldn't spend my time chasing a unicorn on HJ. Smallmouth bass, you bet. And there is a night time walleye bite on HJ as well. But at least a dozen better chances at catching trout along that stretch.

I’ve fished Hungry Jack for close to 40 years and have never caught a trout in there .
