This is such a sigh of relief, thanks to all those who volunteered, donated, talked to neighbors, called legislators, etc. We couldn't have done this without a good unified voice.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland signed an order closing over 350 square miles (900 square kilometers) of the Superior National Forest, in the Rainy River Watershed around the town of Ely, to mineral and geothermal leasing for 20 years, the longest period the department can sequester the land without congressional approval.

20 years is not a long time. But this is good.

Amazing how they can't just make this permanent.

Most excellent. The idea of a foreign mining concern operating there, taking profits and leaving waste, was unsettling.

Nothing is permanent when it comes to federal public lands of any kind, including the national parks. The BWCAW is a creature of Congress, just like the national parks and all the wilderness areas. The opponents of wilderness are one Republican majority away from disposing of federal public lands across this country:

House GOP Would Make It Easier for Feds to Give Public Lands Away to States

I would trust our state with managing public lands more than I would trust the feds. My opinion is "Only" based on their records. Even with the daycare frauds, feeding kids fraud , mnlars etc.......

So the Federal Government sold mining leases to mining companies. Do these companies get their money back form the feds? I know Twin Metals and Teck have spent about $1,000,000,000.00 on leases, prospecting, drilling, etc....
These companies employ locals and pay living wages. Not to mention how they help the community, schools, law enforcement, etc...

If someone from the private sector pulled a stunt like this, they would be charged with Felony Theft By Swindle and locked up. I know the career politicians operate by different laws and rules than I do, so will Biden just say FU and gives these companies the finger? I am betting yes.

Seems the crunchy crowd would rather use child labor for cheap mining .

I am sure all of you know The Bidens are selling their family name and political influence for big $$money$$ from Chinese mining.
In 2016, an investment firm founded by Hunter Biden helped a Chinese mining conglomerate get control of a large Congolese cobalt mine from an American company

There are champions of the wilderness and public protected land on both sides of the political spectrum both past and present. Keep in mind the same folks claiming credit for this are the ones trying to sell us all an electric car in the next 10 years which relies almost solely on the mining of copper and nickel in mass quantities.

I celebrate the victory with everyone else, but dont think for a second that the democrats in this administration actually care about it more than they care about keeping their voters. I think both political parties are an embarrassment right now and surely the republicans (as a whole) don't have a good track-record with public land in recent history, but nobody should trust either side on this one. It will come down to money and that's it.

They both suck.

In Minnesota's case though, state management of the Boundary waters and SNF wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. We're not great at managing many things, but seems like we do have a pretty high quality park system. Would create a lot of jobs too.

Good move, have a friend who was with the MN DNR and did studies on the potential mine back in 1975. That area is so infertile and has little buffer capacity if you get a spill or leakage.

No one knows but theoretically this is the rest of my tripping lifetime. My kids generation seems to understand the importance of preserving nature so I have faith that they will be able to continue to preserve this magical place.
