What are you guys all using for tarps during the heat of summer?

I use a 13’ Warbonnet Superfly over my ridge runner hammock. I always set up in porch mode when weather permits.

Does the Superfly get past the ridgerunners suspension?

The reason why I’m looking at a new tarp is because my UGQ 13 winterdream does not extend past my suspension triangle and it drives me crazy. I have the internal pole mod, which I really like. But I think the pole mode shortens the tarp a little bit.

I’ll continue to use my UGQ tarp but it will probably be my winter setup.

I have a 12 x 10 Hennessy Hex tarp because it came with the used hammock I bought. I added some doors on one side because I wanted some extra gear protection and maybe privacy. It also gave me the option of closing off one end to make a wind break area. Or more shade in porch mode.
Plenty of room to have a comfortable sleep set up. It’s very tight to try to set up a kitchen but could be done if you’re solo. It worked well for last August. The doors worked great for the windy afternoons and evenings. A couple of rain days a one night deluge. I would recommend doors just to control the flo-thru ventilation. I made my own with some 1.1 silnylon but there’s some kits available. Maybe even order it that way if you’re buying a new one

I usually run a separate ridge line. That way I can do the side to side adjustment after I get the “perfect hang”. I have a Warbonnet El Dorado.

Those doors are impressive, Bonz. I agree, I run a continous ridge line 100% on all my tarps.

It doesn’t quite get fully passed the suspension. If it’s bad weather I will stake the doors closed over lapping each other only leaving a small opening.

I have a homemade bridge hammock that I constructed using a kit from Ripstop By The Roll. Last year I got an UGQ WD13 and it fully encompasses my suspension. I used it at summer camp with the Scouts and stayed completely dry despite some good northwoods early summer storms. I've also used it as recently as winter camping in January and hope to use it again next weekend if it's not forecast too low. I have a 20 degree full length Zeppelin UQ and a synthetic UQ from Amazon that I use to layer insulation with a gathered end hammock for winter camping.

I also have a synthetic UQ from REI for their failed Half Dome bridge hammock which fits my bridge nicely, I may also pair it with the Zeppelin if I decide to take the bridge on this month's outing.

I’ve been using the Dutchware Banyon Bridge hammock that utilizes the dual ridgeline and no, I have not messed with shorterning its triangles. I’m short a good 2-3” on each side so it didn’t even cross my mind to redo the triangles as I thought that would be a significant change up.

I’m pretty bummed though, I really like the UGQ WD 13 with the pole mods, etc. If I’m not rocking the pole mod, I feel like I should go a lighter route such as a Warbonnet Mtn Fly or Thunderfly (partial doors).

Mirth, if it’s not too much to ask and absolutely no rush if you do, but do you know what your length of your suspension triangles are?

I would have to measure to be certain, but 30ish inches long stands out. Might be as long as 36". Each dogbone pair is larks headed to a continuous loop, which is also larks headed to descender rings which is my water break. The rings are usually inside the tarp by a few inches on each side.

I have a 12x10 rectangle tarp. I have been in strong enough storms to bounce my hammock and stayed dry.

Even if you get a little bit wet, it’s summer so not a huge deal.

My favorite is a UGQ rectangle, my son likes a 12 hanger UGQ we have another rectangle from Cooke and a winter dream. The winter dream can be limiting due to needing extra length for set up. Tress can be pretty close on some sites.

I’ve read on Hammock Forums that the suspension of the Banyon is a couple inches longer than that of the RR. But good to know. I did order the Warbonnet Thunderfly last night and will post my thoughts once the snow melts.

After using 12x10 tarps on my 11' DH Sparrow, as others have mentioned, I didn't like that the suspension straps would channel rainwater in.

I now have a 4x4 DD tarp (13'x13') and it's perfect.
I like to be able to have a ridge at 7 feet or so, and to bring both sides t0 within a foot of the ground for weather protection during heavy wind-driven rain and in winter. (ridge at 7' height, the 12' direction perpendicular to ridgeline...so that each face of the "roof" is 6 feet. ) That works well (as far as WIDTH for the old tarp). 13 feet on the new tarp works even better.

In the summer, i find 3 stick poles and rig one side in porch mode.
If you need "doors" at the end (This is not for porch mode)...don't stake out the very corner. Go back one tie-out from the corner and stake there. Now the free-hanging corner is a long triangle back to the ridge. On both sides. There are your doors. Little pebbles wrapped in the tarp fabric and wrapped with tie-out cordage...make good tie-outs to "close" the doors. 2 or 3 will suffice.
