Just curious if the Brule River east of Horseshoe is accessible and if there is anyone who has fished it? I would be curious if there is brook trout or anything in there.

The section in the BW has some portages and at least one person has been down it based on the comments.

Regarding the fishing? I know the Brule has brookies in it further down, but i've never fished up there. My guess it mostly northern and walleye.

The MN DNR says that the North Brule River "supports a resident brook trout population in at least the lower eight miles." That's still a few miles from Horseshoe Lake. I asked around a bit about this last summer before my trip to Horseshoe and was given the general impression that it was impassable. I thought I'd go look anyway and found a small stream, choked with brush. I tried to get my trout fix on Misquah instead, but was unsuccessful.

This is great information. I would like to try some river brook trout fishing but this might not be the trip. I might try Jackal and Morgan as there have been some there in the past but lake fishing for brook trout is a little different then river fishing and wanted to give it a try. I was just curious about the river since we will be in this area. Thanks.

You'll probably drive right over a few rivers with brookies on your way up there! The MN DNR puts out a free booklet with maps but you can also find them here. I like to use very small spoons in moving water and have had the best luck trolling worms in the little stocked lakes.
