So you all were so kind in my previous post about weather in September. I also have a question about weather in August. I am actually planning a 2nd trip to the BWCA this year, one in September and then this one in August.

I will be in the BWCA the first week of August and wondered is there much difference in the weather compared to the first week in July when I normally go? Please tell me there are fewer bugs. LOL

I would assume swimming is still a possibility and that nights may dip down a little lower than the first week of July, but anything significant that I need to prepare for?

Appreciate all the comments and time spent to compose them!!

We have gone many times in mid August - it is the most popular time to trip for a reason. Generally warm temps, cooling off at night but still comfy. Fairly stable weather. Bugs are waning but that is a year to year thing. The water is probably at it's warmest point of the year, excellent swimming. Going a week or two earlier I feel like you might have more July like conditions. Once you get into mid August the weather starts to change and you will have a day here or there that feels like fall is coming. That's a good thing.

Absolutely nothing to stop you from going and enjoying but the first week of August, IMO is still more like the height of summer whereas delaying the trip a couple weeks can combine summer with a hint of fall. Take what you can get permits are hard to come by so if you have a good one for early August, go and enjoy. Every time of year has it's benefits...for example at that time of year there is a good chance that berries will be ripe and abundant. Bring a frying pan, some pancake batter and some real maple syrup and enjoy one of the most delightful breakfasts one can have up there.

As far as bugs, black flies should be mostly gone, mosquitoes will be more of a dawn and dusk thing but the remnants of the July biting fly invasion might still be there. Watch your ankles:)

Lindylair said it well...agree with everything written.

My take: go when you have the time and enjoy the weather. Expect to have fun in any condition, plan for the contingencies, and enjoy the changes mother nature throws at you. Some of our most memorable experiences are closely related to the weather.

While every year is different, last year August was great. It was hot, though manageable. The bugs really took a dive starting around the middle of July & the dragonflies were doing a good job of providing close air support when bugs did show. The days are still long that time of year compared to September. Nighttime temps were typically fairly comfortable as well, though warm at times (I think I just used a bedsheet during that timeframe).

Here is a picture from our first August Quetico trip. It was cold!
