It is April 10th. No post about where/when folks have a solo trip planned this year,
I head up to Prairie Portage May 31 and head toward Kashapiwi and who knows where.
I can not wait to get back to Quetico this year. Covid kept me out the past two years, breaking a long--very long streak of Multiple Q trips a year. Finally, 2023 is hear and Quetico is calling my name once again.

It has been very quiet on here. I am planning another 7-8 day solo. This time starting at Hog Creek, heading west to Little Gabbro or so and then looping up and around through the numbered lakes and exiting at Kawishiwi Lake. Inspired by Jaywalker's trip report: Big solo loop

I have a Sept. trip planned in lake One. How far I go depends on what kind of shape I'm in and the results of some medical tests.

Planning a 13-night solo in late May to early June through Kawishiwi. Planning to go to Fishdance, backtrack north to Boulder, see Vee and Fee on my way to Makwa, south and then east to Boze, before exiting through Kawishiwi.

Another two weeker in September, again alone, through LISN. Route TBD based on a number of factors but plenty of time to consider the options.

If everything falls into place, I'll sneak away for a week in early October too.

My best to you, Boonie, on the medical results. Sending good vibes your way.

Six to eight day solo EP 50 May 31. Plan is to spend the night before on Ham lk. and enter the BW on 31st. I'm going to give in to my age and base camp on Long Island with 2 or 3 days on Frost. Day trips to Cherokee and Muskeg. I will add or subtract a day for weather.

Haven't decided on where to go in August yet, maybe Granit River.

I have a Brule permit in the middle of June for a week long trip. I might make it out to Little Sag and Malberg or I might stay on Brule the whole time. I love not having a solid plan or goals on solo trips :-)

Have a group Quetico trip on the books; have not nailed anything down for a solo yet. Likely I will solo in Quetico somewhere between Late July and early September (one week +/-). Wish I could nail it down soon however I am sure it will be June before I can commit.

Have a short solo planned for mid July, just in at Homer and explore Pipe/Vern/Juno...probably end at Brule and walk back to the car. I'm working with a trainer to get in better shape for portaging, so hopefully a longer and more difficult solo next year.
Have a 2 week trip with my son planned for early August, a Louse River loop starting at Brandt.

I have a 6 day solo planned in early June. Heading in at #47 Lizz/swamp. Not sure where I will end up but would like to make it to Gaskin and maybe some of the smaller lakes north of there.

I’m planning a 12 night solo in July going in through Kawishiwi Lake, and a 6 night solo in late September through Baker Lake. I don’t have specific routes planned for either trip. I enjoy deciding as I go.

Have a Kawish ep set for May 29, but will probably cancel this as first grandchild is due on June 9. Do not want to miss that, but I REALLY want to get onto the water. May just pull the plug on that trip and wait until after the baby arrives and then set up a Q solo. That is the beauty of the Q; no worries, ever, about permits.

I an hoping to do a two week fishing trip in early June in the nw corner of Q.

For my normal three week trip in late August I am of two minds. Normally I would do a major U starting in Beaverhouse down to Agnes and out at French. But this would result in a few days in the burn area. The other option is to start at LAC, going along the southern edge, working over to the S chain and then up to Beaverhouse. I will have to make a decision soon but not yet.

I've had a May 29 Baker Lake solo planned for awhile, 4-5 nights, hoping to see moose, catch a few eaters, and just enjoy an area I haven't yet explored. I've set my mind to lightening and simplifying my load for this trip and, for my first time, single portaging. I've always double portaged and enjoy the "extra" hikes to observe, etc. But this has been (and continues to be) a fun challenge for me, learning a lot from more experienced paddlers on this site about dehydrated foods and single portage packing techniques. Pretty excited about giving this a try. We'll see how it goes.

Also have a Daniels permit for July while my family stays on Flour Lake. Planning to wind my way back to the family via Rove-Watap-Mountain-Clearwater-Caribou-Deer-Moon-Flour. Did a similar trip last year entering at Clearwater and camping on Caribou for a night before exiting as above. Looking forward to a little longer trip and revisiting Watap and Mountain.

A Sept Mudro permit is my wild card...initially planned as a solo, could morph into a tandem. Will be yet another new area for me.

Got a short solo planned in through the Snake River - early May.

Maybe another later (Sept?), depending on time & permit availability.

Not sure if I will be doing any Solo's this year, I will be volunteering for the USFS out of Tofte RD and paddling with the rangers. It will be the first time in ages I paddle with anyone else other than my wife.

Four or five days into Wood Lake middle of July. Nothing strenuous- sleep, eat, relax, repeat.

Sawbill entry for the Louse River/Lady Chain loop the week before Memorial Day. Looking for some challenge and solitude. I’ve spent a lot of time over the past year lightening pack weight with plans to single portage. Only 35 days to go!

Hopefully another spur of the moment solo in October like I did last year during Halloween weekend. Something short and simple to relax and enjoy some time alone.

I have a June trip to Wood with little duckling booked for some fishing.

My brother and his family are coming home from Costa Rica for 3 weeks and we might try to get away for a quick trip. The only time he’s been to the bwca was for a school trip in 7th grade

I am also attempting a solo trip from Lake One in early June. I enter June 13th and see what happens. I have never soloed before so I thought the numbered lakes would be a great location for my first solo. 5 days of relaxation here I come!

First, Syd, you are not attempting a solo, you are doing a solo :). We can help you with that. I've done a bunch of solo trips, but I've never entered at Lake One, so I'll be looking for your report ;). Enjoy it! They can be very relaxing, especially if you keep it simple.

Planning a 7-8 day solo from LIS #14 and probably north thru the cascade. Past that no plans. Putting in on Sept. 5th. I’ve done many BW trips but they have all been early June in and mid June out. Anything I should be aware of or need to consider.

Hey Jim,

I enter LISN 14 the day before you and it'll be the third year in a row I've done the route. Lots of route options! Since you've done a lot of BW trips, I'll simply mention the two biggest differences between June and September trips that I notice - fewer bugs and fewer people in September. Hope you have a great trip!

Fewer people in September.... though not for the week after Labor Day. Maybe fewer people but definitely more groups (no kids).

Re the Sept. question: as with all the months in the northern climes, anytime between mid-May and first part of September moves at lightening speed. The rest is winter. :)
First part of September means no families, no bird calls (that tapers off in the later part of July), and no insects. Everything is in "sitting mode" - it just sits there. Done growing, mating, nesting, fighting, stinging, biting, feeding, etc. Just resting. Except the birds - they're getting ready or on their way south. The silence and shorter day length are very noticeable with each passing day in September. October is glorious or treacherous.
Re: the OP, solos to Quetico and Wabakmi this season, and a few trips with persons who haven't yet been but have always wanted to go. Can't wait!

May -LIS for a 4 night loop

Aug -Q for a week long trip

Sept-Oct will jump in a trip or two

First week of June, an 8 day trip from EP30 Lake One to EP54 Sea Gull, still debating if I take the direct route through Thomas and Kek and Ogish, or east to Alice and Little Sag and Paulson and the 400+ rod portage to Sea Gull from there.

Then, late August, another 8 day from Moose up through Knife and Kek/Fraser/Ima/Ensign back to Moose, or possibly a shorter loop, who knows, time to figure it out.

I'll be heading into Baker and paddling a Frost River loop; heading up in about 4 weeks. Trying to time the window between ice out and bugs. Dehydrating food now to prep and looking at gear lists to see where I can cut some more weight.

04/25/2023 01:57PM
I’ve got a Kahshahpiwi permit in early Sept. I’ll go for 9 or 10 nights with my dog Luna. This will be her 7th trip and she just turned 12. I’ll see how she does on portages but my loop could get cut short if she’s having trouble. I don’t anticipate any but I’m aware of her age now.

I’m thinking of tenting for the first time since 2016. I love my hammock but would need to bring Luna’s 3 lb tent and an additional tarp so going in my 2 person tent with Luna sleeping with me will keep the gear lighter and I’ll also have less work to do.

I’m working on organizing a meet up mid trip with another solo.

Hoping to head into the Q for three nights on 5/15.
