Hola all,
Just had to post this as I can't wait to get in there. Last year was a tough one, one week later due to the spring conditions, should have waited another week or two.

Taking in two newbies. My son and I have been going in every year for the last five years (he is now 13), so this year we are bringing a friend of his and his father. Really excited fro them to see and epxerience the BWCA.

This is also a new area for me, have done plenty of trips based out of Ely or Grand Marais.

We will base camp on South Temperance and have some good day trips planned.

Hope the fishing gods will shine upon us, I can tell you it wont be for a lack of trying.

Thanks to all who offered input and advice on my past posts.

Tight lines all.

Have a fantastic trip with your son! I hope your newbies enjoy the experience as well!

If you are entering Brule and heading west to South Temperance, be sure to get early start when the winds are, hopefully, down. Don't bite off more than you can chew if the winds are up, it can be a treacherous lake. Hopefully all is calm for you, it is a beautiful lake. South Temperance is one of my favorite lakes, absolutely gorgeous with good fishing. Hope you have a great trip.

Sharing in the excitement here. Tomorrow is packing day, then it’s driving day for my trip! So much to do and so much anticipation!

Recall the excitement and anticipation of many Brule trips, over the years. Fished South Temperance one time. It is not a big, deep lake. Mostly small walleye fishing. It is just a short carry over portage from Brule. You would have a better selection of camping and fishing on Brule. Have not fished the West end of Brule often but have seen some good catches taken from that area. I could help you with the east half of Brule and you wouldn't need to risk that trip in the wind, and have more time for your activities and better selection. There are many opportunities for day trips from a base camp on Brule.

Wishing you good weather and a successful trip, however you decide to do it. Let us know how you make out.

Be careful of the wind out there on Brule, especially with some newbies. Lots of fetch on that lake that can make things dicey in a hurry. As previously mentioned, make you sure get as early of a start as possible.

Thanks, are you heading in this year? Have you ever fished Wench? Have a feeling a bit of a redundant question for you. If it has brook trout in it and it is int he BWCA, ou have fished it. Hope all is well.

Thanks for the note. I have been warned of the wind. We will start as early as we can, and have a plan B if needed.

Scott,

I'm no fishing master, but we did have some luck in that area that I'm happy to share our honeyholes. Shoot me an email.

Hey Scott... just as a suggestion (you can do whatever you want with it)... when you answer directly to someone else's post, you might consider using the "Reply with Quote" option so that person and others know who you're responding to.

You can also edit the length of the quoted part simply by deleting unrelated information for your post.

Chuckles: "Shoot me an email. "

<<<<< Chris, note the little envelope under my name?

In order for a member of BWCA.com to send you an email, you need to make your email address available. To do that, click on "Edit Profile" near the top of the page.

Near the bottom of the next page, "un-click" the box that says "Hide my email address from others..."

After you do that, the little envelope will show up below your name every time you post. Folks can then email you if needed. Hope that helps.

Hey All,

So the wind gods were with us on the way in. We hit the water around 10am. They were at our back and pretty strong. Made the paddle down the lake seem easy and relatively quick. Found the portage into S. Temperance easy enough. Worked the water below the falls as it looked great and surprisingly one of the 13yr olds only found a pike. I say surprising as the pools at the bottom of rapids are usually pretty productive. Also ate lunch on the big rock listening to and watching the water.

Paddled to the campsite we had in mind and, to our surprise, it was vacant. We set up camp, collected firewood, had to cruise shorelines as the site was pretty picked over. Eventually got on the water to do some fishing and were not able to catch a fish.

Next day I discovered the newbie father and son we brought in were sleepers. Did not hit the water at a time that was in my opinion conducive to catching fish.

Next day we did a day trip to Wench, following day down the S. Temperance River. The day out was blistering hot and sunny. Wind was against us, but really mild.

The paddle out took way longer than the way in. We finally hit the EP and for the next few hours and next day, the effects of being pounded by the sun and the lenghty paddle were felt. We enjoyed fish dinners, great weather and a super trip. However, not sure I would do it again, Brule is a big lake.

Sounds like overall it was a great trip! Too bad you learned about sleep habits during fishing time...hope that turned out okay. :) You did say you enjoyed fish dinners. What did you catch? Did you catch some brookies on Wench? My two youngest daughters and I hope to make it to South Temperance next week (Baker Entry) and are considering a day trip to Wench.

Yeti - Wench is decent for brookies. It's getting a little late for them...but still catchable shallow. They can generally be found shallow and active up until lupines bloom. S.Temperance is good for walleye, this time of year, i'd focus on south facing points and adjacent shorelines. Evening should be better than morning.

Thank you, Speckled! I know you've given me advice and insights in the past and appreciate the intel on Wench Lake. Hoping my daughters can add brookies to their bwca catch list on our trip next week!
