Is there a certain size hook that you look for when purchasing jig heads? What are the most important aspects of a jig head you look for? I'm sure weight is one.

What is the most common size? Mine are mostly 1/8 oz, but I will use 1/4 oz if I need to get deeper or the wind is blowing and we are drifting. I will use 1/16 oz at times, but not too often.
Someone asked me about jig heads and I figured there are people on here that jig a lot more than me and know much better.

Small for me is 1/4 oz... using that and 3/8. Never considered hook size. 1/8 and 1/16 are pretty small and my motto is "big bait, big fish".

3/8 oz usually. 1/4 oz if fishing very shallow. Up to 1/2 oz if having trouble feeling the bottom in deeper/windier conditions. You want it to get to the bottom. You want to feel that it's bouncing on the bottom. You'll snag sometimes. Attempting to avoid it and you won't be catching any walleye.

I use 2/0 on most of my jigs but do have some 3/0 on some 1/2 oz jigs.

I started using Bait Rigs Odd'ball jigs last year. They have become my favorite jig to use. I take 1/8 all the way to 5/8 sizes. I'm mostly using the 5/8 size to keep in touch with the bottom, any lighter and I'm not touching many times. These jigs have a 1/0 hook and I would call them a wide gap hook for a jig. They can be rigged many different ways with plastics. Extra large eye for feeding the line through for knots. And they're a stand up jig. Highly recommend.

When fishing with live bait I really like to use 1/8 oz if I can. The problem with a lot of those is the hook size is too small. I have had success with Lindy live bait jigs, fireball jigs and northland RZ jigs.

Use the lightest jig you can that will still allow you to keep contact with bottom. I use from 1/16 to 1 oz. If you are casting up shallow for early season walleyes (my favorite) go 1/16. Vertical in current calls for one ounce. Match hook size to bait.

I use #1 sickle hooks with the 1/8 heads. That’s what I go with 80% of the time. #2 sickle with 1/16 and 1/0 with 3/16.
