Does anyone know the cottonwood situation on Moose / Newfound / Sucker / Basswood? Headed up there in a week and it’s a nightmare down here near Chicago. Nothing ruins a fishing trip in BWCA more than cottonwood stuck in your guides.

It is actually aspen cotton you are talking about, not cottonwood cotton, there really aren't any cottonwood trees up there. Doesn't really matter, they both suck! I haven't heard any reports yet, but had two trips ruined from it the past two years.

Oh man that stuff will wreck a reel/line. Reminds me to bring the nail clippers. If you don’t know what I mean, you will some day... lol

Cottonwood trees are going crazy in Central MN so can't see why Ely area wouldn't be experiencing the same thing either now or the coming days.

.....as stated earlier, there are no cottonwood trees in the BWCAW.

They’re called aspen catkins but very similar. Haven’t heard much but they were a mess last year on our early/mid-June trip

Yes it’s Aspen trees. No cottonwoods. Yes last year was a mess.
I spent hours trying to pick that stuff off my line with my finger nails. Impossible.

This year it was pine or spruce (or both) pollen rather than Aspen for some reason...it was everywhere, but it did not impact fishing the way the Aspen pollen did in late May '22.
