Tales like this are one of the reasons I was happy to be a dog handler and not a ground pounder in my SAR days. People who haven’t carried a litter are often shocked to find out how arduous it is, especially since your feet are off the trail most or all of the time.
Broken ankle is always one of my biggest concerns out there...especially since I broke my ankle once just stepping off my deck wrong. Glad the rescue went well. Carrying someone out from that trail would definitely be brutal.
I'm curious how the injured individual was able to notify rescue authorities. Don't know why they leave info like that out in these articles. That information could be valuable for many hikers.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.
