What flies and tatics for very early fishing in the Q? I am going with some die hard fishermen and I want to take a fly rod instead of spinning tackle. I figured I might need to start tying some flies. Thinking Dalbergs, wooly worms, wooly burgers and some basic poppers for smallies. What else and how to present that early?

Not sure about the species you'll be chasing, but if its soon after ice out the lakers will be shallow and loving anything minnow-y in white, silver and blue. Look for pike in shallow dark bottomed bays, and sight fish 'em with big bunny leech patterns. We hammer the pike in ND sloughs with purple and black bunny leeches in 6-8" patterns. Find a fish, lay a fly a foot in front of her snout, and give it the quiver routine until it bites or swims away. For walleyes try a clouser in creek mouths, or just bite the bullet and fish a jig/twister tail combo slow on the bottom.
