Does anybody have experience with these two models of portage packs?
I have been wanting to buy a Frost River pack for many years and have some gift cards to redeem. I’m curious if there is a better choice between the models since the Grand Portage pack has two crossed straps vs. the three parallel straps on the No. 7. Dimension wise they are similar in width and height but the Grand Portage is 9”deep vs. 6 “.

I just purchased the Grand Portage for that reason, more depth so my gear fits more neatly. Haven’t tripped with it yet but anticipate it will make a world of difference over my previous pack the Timber Cruiser Jr. I like the idea of the crossed straps too.

I started my tripping with 2 Woods packs, the ones Bill Mason preferred. They sold for $28.00 each, so that tells you it was many moons ago. Personally, I prefer the 3 parallel straps , rather than the 2 crisscrossed straps on the Woods packs. It makes a much neater package.

NikonF5user: "Curious if either of your ever made it out yet with the Grand Portage pack? It reminds me of the Duluth Northwoods - which I believe may have been designed by Bill Mason. Would love to hear your experiences with the pack..."
First trip set for this Spring with the Grand Portage! I’ll leave some thoughts here for sure. Now just have to hurry up and wait.

Just got back from a week trip. The Grand Portage worked great. It is a roomy pack, and the one thing I’d mention is that you want to make sure you’ve got it packed full. Not to suggest over packing, but you do want have a full load distributed throughout. The two straps that cross cross will be out of whack if you aren’t, and I’ll probably punch a few extra holes in the strap in case I need them.
The side lash cords and small side pockets worked well to hold my saw and small axe. Plenty of options to stow a quick grab item.
Everything is good quality and I like the extra canvas for the closure flaps, nice and big with good coverage. Straps were comfy, will take a few outings to break in tho putting it on and off without catching or getting caught up behind me.
All in all I’m super happy I upgraded to this pack. Has the room I need, the options I was looking for, and the quality I expect from FR.
