Going into Crab Lake toward the end of August. Just looking at the map and was curious if anyone has gone up to Silaca? Have never seen it mentioned in a trip report. Will have a couple of kids with us so don’t want to drag them up there if it’s a dud…but do like the idea of maybe having no one else around. There are 7 in our group, far more than is usual for us.

I ski through Silica all the time. Pretty little lake with access to decent hiking on the old fire road (now ski trail) off the portage to Coxey. Coxey is quite nice as well. If you take the trail towards Burntside and hang right on the junctions you will get to a ridge top with a great overlook of Silica.

Following this closely. I am going in at Crab on Aug 31st solo with a plan to just do a lot of exploring. Silica and Coxey are on my list either as a day trip from Cummings or a night on a smaller lake.

I also ski through this area during the winter, Silaca is a beautiful little lake. I probably would stay on Coxey Pond as it’s got excellent bass fishing (I portaged in from ski trails for the day and di really well.) Most likely you’ll not see anyone else.

We are entering on the 29th. If we get there at all I’m sure it would take us a couple days. I really appreciate your consideration but don’t worry too much about our plans because they are a long way from being set in stone. If you do see us, stop and say hi.

Sounds good. Depending on the wind conditions I may try to get back to Covey my first or second night. I'll be paddling a Prism with flying moose stickers on the front and Rockwood outfitter decals on the back. I plan to go in the 31st and back out the 4th, so sometime in there we will likely cross paths.
