We went out of mudro last aug/sep and it was not great. Last time I went out of there the river was much higher (2014). last year I had planned to do horse river up and the juice was not worth the squeeze. Trying a later trip this year early Oct and would love to go out of Mudro but not if it's anything like it was last year. Anyone have any info on the condition of Mudro or Horse river as of now? Anything is Greatly appreciated as I would much rather avoid going to the heavily traveled areas of the Eastside.

Our group of four will be entering at Mudro in a couple weeks and will be happy to update. Been a few years (6) since we’ve used that EP and confess to a bit of anxiety ourselves.

We came out of Fourtown and Mudro last week. It was our first trip for this EP, so I have nothing to compare it with. However, it appeared that there were a couple of extra lift overs and an extra portage near the entrance to Mudro Lake. We couldn’t use the customary launch site at the EP. We had to carry our canoes and packs another hundred yards or so.

Thanks. Sounds about the same as last year then. Just trying to avoid too much water walking in Oct.

I exited Mudro 2 weeks ago. We launched at the beach spot maybe 20 rods from the parking lot and walked the canoe in the creek until it was deep enough to get in and paddle. We had to get out a few times, most of them closer to Mudro where it gets rocky. There is a short carry (half a rod) if you can't line the canoe through a skinny rocky spot which was annoying. The Horse River itself was deep enough to run/line all the rapids possible on the way down, with day trip gear - with a full gear loadout it's possible they would've all be lineable but maybe not. Unless we get a bunch of rain late in the season, I think it'll be skinny in October. Prepare for several quick unloads and carryovers.

As for times, it was about 2 hours from the mouth of the Horse to the outlet in Lower Basswood Falls, with our day trip loadout (so running most stuff and lining a few, with single carrying the 3 marked portages). On the way back up, it was about 3 hours, lining all of the small rapids instead of the carryovers, and we wasted some time lining the final marked portage close to the mouth of the river because we felt like an adventure lol. So with double carrying and more gear, it probably would've been closer to 3 hours on the way down river, and assuming no wasting time lining the marked portages (which exist for a reason, use them), the way back up probably would've been closer to 4 hours because of all of the carryovers. With skinny October water I'm not sure. It could be 3.5 hours on the way down and 4.5 hours on the way up. Hard to say for sure.

Oh and the time from Mudro to the island campsite on the north end of Horse was about 3.5 hours, double carrying, maybe 3 hours or so to the mouth of the river. With an added lunch stop, I'd say Mudro to LBF would've been about 6.5-7 hours double carrying. With the lower water in October, at my typical speeds, I'd expect it to be more like 8-9 hours.

thanks for the info JD. We planned to to the horse last year and when we got to it and saw the wall of rocks just to get into the mouth decided to stay in the fourtown area. Didn't want a repeat of Isabella river a couple years prior of dragging the canoe through.

Just came out of Mudro. The entry point requires a little walking as the flow is really low. Horse River was not too bad. We were able to get out and allow the loaded canoes to float through some of the rocky areas that we have had to portage around in the past. I think it took us about 6.5 hours to get to LBF. We went on up to Thursday Bay and out through Gun/Fourtown. We got to experience doing the mile portage into Gun during a thunderstorm with hail. Good times.

BC thanks for the update. Have not done that portage yet but have heard its not pleasant during good weather so hail must have sucked. Horse river sounds promising then provided some rain to keep levels somewhat up.

Our group excited the Mud 2 SEP. Beaver have built an impressive dam on the pond opposite the portage blocking almost all water flow. Lining and lift overs as stated, but nothing too dramatic. Y’all have fun.
