Wow, a very sweet and kind remembrance of your dear friend. honestly, i'm glad you added your ages because it made the story all the more meaningful.
i'm only 62 and doubt i would have tackled that climb.
your feelings about the heron were exactly as i was thinking as you were telling of it's leading you home.
you are three of the best friends Don could have hoped for in life.

Ken, what a beautiful trip report and caring send-off to your long-time friend and paddling partner. I have two friends who introduced me to paddling Quetico back in the mid-80s and we have been on 30+ trips together over the years. Two of my truly best friends. I can see a similar report in our, hopefully distant, future.
