This is a great report. You learned a lot a out your abilities, and probably also learned that you brought too much gear! Go for that 5 day trip again, but limit yourself to 2 bags instead of 4. You can do it. Good luck next time, and take your time. You can do it.

Have done Heart Attack hill or I think some call it the Goat Portage as well, Many times. It’s a tough one.
Nice job, ya made it out alive and want to go back…better than most after their first trip :)

Love this report. Reminds me so much of my first solo (in Quetico). I, too, was waaay overpacked and usually triple portaged.
In spite of it all, I hope you left with a big sense of accomplishment, because you did really great. BW trips are rarely "walks in the park" and always offer a mix of beauty, serenity and four letter word portages.
I, too, have been blessed with "portage angels" and have reciprocated many times.
PS - I was in the BW out of Sawbill those same days.
PPS - Got married at the takeout there at Mudro. Beautiful spot. Still married!

We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

I always enjoy first time trip reports so thanks for doing this. You were very brave doing your first BWCA trip as a solo. I can't imagine doing that. Took me a lot of years before I made the leap to solo.
I did my first solo trip over my 56th birthday. That trip also taught me the importance of traveling light as you age. I now travel with a single pack that weighs under 30 lbs including food. It makes portages so much easier and safer.
I look forward to reading about your future trips.

Thanks for sharing the experience you had during your trip. You'll find ways to cut out gear (it sounds like you need to cut your gear in half or better) and you'll know how to physically prepare for next time. I can't imagine doing any portages as many times as you did as it would make me exhausted as well!
