I have some time off work coming up in February and I'm thinking about going up to Ely for a few days. Never been up there in the winter. What are some good winter Day trips within an hour's drive or so of Ely? Mostly thinking of hiking/snowshoeing, depending on snow depth. TIA

Link to trip report. I was up there last month and did some snow snowshoeing out of EP 77 South Hegman Lake on the echo trail to the pictographs on north hegman. Out and back from the parking lot is about four miles. You could connect to the angleworm trail if you wanted to go further.

Thanks. Jodi Middendorf had a video of this trip on her YouTube channel recently, so it was on my list of possibilities. Looks like a neat outing.

Stuart River up Whitefeather is a nice day trip. The trail to Angleworm is probably pretty well packed by now, but beyond that wear snowshoes. Also the old LaCroix Trail up to Mule Lake is a great to snowshoe.
