Last week we entered EP 16 and noticed three memorial crosses for the guys who died at Curtain Falls last year. They were back in the trees about 25 feet. One of my good friend's cousin's son inlaw was one of the guys who died in the accident so I planned on taking a picture of them for him when we came out. When we got back they were gone. I'm wondering if anybody knows what happened to them.

Weird. I saw them just one week ago today when I came out. I hope we can learn more.

This is only speculation...I worked for a federal land agency for my entire career. Scattering of ashes and construction of memorials (religious, crosses, or otherwise) is not sanctioned or allowed on federal lands. Not to say that it doesn't happen. As it was explained to me, federal lands belong to all and are often multi-purpose. If ashes/memorials are allowed, then essentially you are creating a "sacred" area. This could then prevent federal actions on the land in the future (think controlled burns, fuelwood gathering, habitat enhancement, and so forth). Burials and cemeteries on federal land generally existed prior to the designation of the land as federal and are therefore "grandfathered" in.
Could be that the memorial was removed for this reason. Once again, pure speculation on my part.

I also worked for federal land management agencies for 30 years and this was my first thought.
