Nice! We got back right when you went in, similar route only we went West and South from Pillsbury to Henson, then on to Winchell before back up to Gaskin and Caribou. I think we stayed on the same island on Meeds :) And yes, some of those portages are basically streams right now, and kind of rough - my 12 year old was getting lost in the bushes growing onto the trail. Still, I love this area!

I just saw this because this was my post (SneakyMeeks) but I lost my password, so I had to make a new account! And I agree, some of the portages were pretty mucky (if I recall, Swallow > Pilsbury and Pilsbury > Henson?). I am going with my mom this year in August, and since I couldn't snag a permit for Lizz I am hoping the Meeds portage isn't too bad. I just remember last year that portage being a BEAST, and I am still in my 20's!! Kudos to your kiddo being so resilient, I hope you two were able to see plenty of wildlife up there :)

Thanks for sharing your report. I wish there had been more photos. This is an area we traveled at the beginning of our 22-day trip in 1992 (trip report is called 'The Long Trip', I think) and while we had different conditions on the portages, your descriptions still brought back some memories.
