My son is coming out tomorrow from Crooked on a solo trip. He's on the west end and wondering what it would be like to take the river south (would shorten significantly his trip--he's coming out Angleworm).

Anyone have intel?

I take it you mean taking Beartrap River from Iron after portaging Curtain Falls. There is no portage from Sunday Bay to Sunday Lake despite what’s indicated on some maps.

From the top of Curtain Falls via Iron Lake to the EP20 parking lot is about 22 miles, 6 miles of which are portages. If double portaging, the total distance is almost 34 miles.

If water levels are at all low he will likely be walking the canoe through parts of the river between Sunday and Beartrap, and it’s muddy is spots. The Angleworm EP portage is over 2 miles so double portaging it will take a few hours alone.

If I was at the top of Curtain Falls I’d head out via Friday Bay to the Mudro EP (23) or via Iron/LLC to the Moose River North EP (16).

My son arrived back at my house at midnight. He ended up taking the "portage" south out of Sunday Bay and found it more like a "moose path" that was a major bushwhack without any sign of recent human presence. His downloaded GPS map saved his skin.

He learned a lot on this trip and I did just by listening to his description of his first solo trip. Crazy.

I've looked for that portage years ago, at both ends, and although someone had flagged a very short portion, I turned back. My hat is off to your son for making it through.

Wow! That’s impressive. That portage is in a PMA, it has not been maintained in a long time.

He says it was incredibly difficult. A drag of solo canoe and pack...just a moose trail mainly.

I was blown away by what he did there. I tried to send him intel but it was too late. He was already in there. And the other ways out were LONG and it was really windy.

He said it looked like years since anyone had been through there.

He had a GPS downloaded map and says that saved him or else he would have been completely lost bushwhacking with no idea where he was.

Voyager he said there were random red flags on trees (and some on the ground) all the way along here and there.
