I’m planning a family vacation for next summer. Do you have any favorite lodges mid-Gunflint Trail? I’d like to stay in a lodge or cabin for two families with the idea of doing a day trip into BWC and fishing near the lodge, but also be close to town for other activities.

Hungry Jack Lodge for the win. Great cabins, great restaurant and bar, pool table and arcade games, canoe, kayak and paddle board rentals, there is a nice little trout lake about a mile up the road they will rent a small boat and motor in (or canoes). Not too bad of a trip to Grand Marais, maybe 30 minutes. The lake is managed for smallmouth so there are trophies in there and some decent walleyes to be had.

Rockwood. We’ve been using them for many years for their bunkhouses before/after trips and week long stays in their cabins. Poplar is a nice lake and you can access 3 different BWCA entry points from Poplar for day trips. Trail Center and Poplar Haus restaurants are very close.

Maybe I’m up there enough to be able to separate trips… but gunflint trips are separate and distinct from Grand Marais trips. I’d say there’s enough to do at trail center area and keep it all on the trail opposed to driving back to town. Hit Grand Marais up for a meal or ice cream and a walk to the light house at the beginning or end of the trip.
