Heading up tomorrow. Just packed my bug shirt - crazy it's almost October. In decades of paddling this time of year I have never seen a mosquito.

Yup, we tripped through the Louse River last week. With temps in the mid to upper 80s and water everywhere, the mosquito numbers rose steadily throughout the trip.

My sources are telling me the fall will have extended warmth. I guess that means January pheasant hunting in SD will be bountiful.

I agree with your sources. Not much change into the first 10 days of OCT in the overall pattern. Need to get a recurving typhoon in the Pacific -- meaning - one that recurves NE into the Aleutians area and disrupts the stubborn ridge that has set up shop since around Sept 10th. The Pacific is at near record low for typhoons and I believe very close to the latest on record for first occurrence of a Super Typhoon (Ragassa) right now or just was-- so have not had much chance of that happening and with the ATL stuck (it will pick up) in the doldrums also- it's been stagnant weather for many.
I will put out a winter update in the weather forums in the near future.

This picture was taken in 1997 just south of the town of Isabella around Qct. 10th. A road just off highway #1. We got like 20 inches of snow and we also chopped trees off Highway #1 to get thru. Trees were across the highway everywhere. We were moose hunting. Got toward Ely they got zero snow.
Fast forward the around 2000,I was by Isabella lake around the first week of Oct. and got 8 inches of snow. So this time of year thinks can be weird either way.

Something happens when I go by Isabella lake country. Been there for the Pagami fire, the Fourth of July wind storm. Two Oct. snowstorms and when that individual got lost up the Pow Wow trail, and also that individual never found by Kawishiwi lake.
Haven't been there for a couple of years now and things have been quite. Hmm, I just wonder?

WhiteWolf - I have a Baker Lake permit for next Monday, and right now the NWS forecast for that area is upper 60s to around 70 for that time frame. Which wouldn't be bad at all. Think that'll be accurate or should I anticipate warmer temps?

Seems spot on from what I see. Warm for the season ( time of year) - but would you want anything else? Nights getting longer = days getting shorter due help temper temps a bit - but this is an epic time to trip.

Thanks WhiteWolf. Those sound like almost perfect camping conditions to me. Was supposed to be in there right now, but I came down with a nasty flu bug the day before I was supposed to leave. Still trying to shake it off, hope I'm fully recovered by Monday.

At 4 PM the Temp was 79 degrees F. at Seagull lake.

I'm headed to Isabella Lake on Saturday.

Sometimes I would do a day loop-Put in at Isabella Lake-go downstream hit the Island river than paddle up to the Tomahawk road and walk back to my truck.

It was a strange year. We got that snow at Isabella, I came back to Brainerd, all they had was nice warm balmy weather at home. Went back up north after about one day. The weather turned around and was hall way mild. You get such weather swings this time of year.

Yep. Wild mood swings from Mother Nature seem more and more common but somehow we usually manage to hit our normal average temps...so watch out cause there may be a polar vortex around the corner.

Never too warm for me. Just got back from a trip. The Ely Echo says the prolonged warm water temps are making the fishing cold.

I scientifically took water temp measurements of 15 Quetico lakes over the past four days using the ol' 'dip-your-hand-in-the-water' method.

All but one were very very warm. The one exception was unsurprisingly a smaller Laker lake...but I would imagine even there they were still deep.

I'm on Isabella Lake now, 80 degrees and calm. Went paddling this morning to beat the heat. A couple mosquitoes but really no bugs.

Average September temps in Minnesota have risen over 5 degrees since the early 1970. September has become another summer month most years now. Peak fall colors now average 10-14 days later than in the 1960s. Imagine 50 years into the future...

No one knows what it will be like in 50 years. 50 years ago, the "experts" said we would be in an "ice age" By now. In Search Of The Coming Ice Age .. I can understand the "fear" of an ice age. Just 10000 years ago the bwca was under 2 miles of ice. Man, nor beast could not have lived.

I notice that going into the BWCA, colors are much later than the past in many years reecently.

Near-record temps in SW MI and near-record low water levels in the St Joseph River. No complaints given the summer was hot and humid and buggy and smokey....much more than usual. Fortunately/unfortunately it's perfect weather for deck maintenance.

are increasing global temperatures.

I'm guess you would prefer the science of 2025 over that of 1975 to treat your cancer...

well said, science is always about looking at past data and improving with new data and better techniques. It is amazing what they are doing world wide in this study.

wow Ely and Isabella both got to 81 degrees F. today each breaking their previous records of 74 degrees F. for the day. Want to do some grouse hunting up there but not in this heat.
For decades I fished lake trout the last week of season in quetico and the water was cooled down enough we would catch lake trout in numbers right next to the surface. Even had a skim of ice along shore a couple of times.

Two years ago we were catching lake trout shallow, last week of sept. This year we were swimming. Somebody better do something quick about this Global warming stuff.

Yes it is heaven when the leaves are gold and red and cruising your favorite lake trout on a calm morning with the reflection of the leaves-trees in the water and few floating around.
Looking back maybe I didn't appreciate how lucky I was. Top it off we would see a few bull moose in full rut than.

"It is very tough Laker fishing in the fall if temp of the water does not get into the 50's.

With record breaking heat the last 3 days and averaging 25 degrees above normal statewide, I noticed at least in Brainerd the ash and aspen trees start to turn color than go black and fall of due to the heat, so I wonder how fall colors will be this year.

Not good. Especially this late. Leaves in the St.Croix Valley are flying off like crazy this afternoon.

I'm going to have to change my favorite month of the year from September to November at this rate.

I went car camping at a place with a lake beach, only to find they closed the fenced beach on Labor Day. Lots needs to change if this weather trend persists. No fun to camp in the heat unless you can cool off in water somewhere (imho). I went to a nearby outdoor swimming pool and swam four times last week. Pretty sure I got sunburned too. Yes, in Minnesota.
