Does anyone know of a map which on a large scale clearly shows the flow of water through the canoe area?

I know that with topo maps you can determine the flow of water, I understand that the Laurentia divide separates the water flowing south versus the water headed to Hudson Bay, but I am looking for a large scale visual map of where the water flows.

For instance, the Kawishiwi River flows south into Birch lake, then heads back north through Farm Lake and eventually into Basswood. How many other interesting water flows like this one are in the BWCA/Quetico? A color coded map of the entire area showing the water flow is what I am curious to see.

Any suggestions?

thanks
dd

This is a watershed map and will give you a general direction of water flow. I have seen some maps with arrows indicating waterflow direction of larger rivers, but I don't remember the source.

I have never seen a color coded map like that. With shaded water? Or just a topo map with darker colors for higher elevation? When I am in doubt, I compare lake elevations. Fisher puts these on most lakes and it's easy to tell at a glance that X lake is 8 feet lower than Y lake, so the river between them must be flowing from Y to X.

Brule Lake is kind of unusual in that it is the source of two different rivers- the Temperance and the Brule.

I just did a trip from Farm Lake to Clear on the North Kawish River and it flows west into Farm Lake. Pretty sure the South Kawish flows the same direction into Birch Lake. Mostly west/southwest.

Here is a simplified map showing general water flow directions and watersheds.

And here's a cool tool where you can drop water anywhere in the world and see where it will go: https://river-runner-global.samlearner.com/

Cool app - GT

As suspected, a drop of water near a tree in the parking lot of a local pub could make its way through various tributaries to the mighty Mississippi and ultimately to the Gulf of ____.

This won’t be exactly what you are looking for, but it is informative and beautiful.
